Description

Folks we have here a very nice 1990 Jaguar XJS V12 Coupe.
I wanted one of this while at University, but could not remotely afford it. But, in 2014 I could afford a nice used one. More particularly, one that had been in a car collection in Palm Desert, California and had only 27K original miles on it.
It had been snapped up by a dealer in Nashville, TN, where I spotted it, and bought it. You can find these once in a while in very nice shape, for around 16 to 18K. But, that is only the beginning. If you are a fan of these cars, you know that the car is complicated and is getting on in years. Condition is everything, or course, and here I had one in super shape. I took it to one of the best old Jag restorers/mechanics in the USA, Bob Acuff in Nashville. When we put it up on his lift, we were both amazed at how clean and original the car was. Being a California car means no rust. The car was like new underneath. But, it had been in a collection for a long time, run only on occasion.
My goal was to make this car a nice reliable driver, not collect it. Hence, my directive was to have Bob go bumber to bumper giving it anything it needed, cost no object. Here is a list from memory, and from his notes, some of the recent work was done by another top flight shop, Delongs Jaguar, in San Jose, California:
Replace all hoses
Replace steering rack and bushings.
Repair, adjust, tune all injection linkage.
Replace master cylinder and boost.
Replace all spark plugs wires, plugs, rotor, and distributor cap
Replace oil pressure sensor
Drain transmission fluid, completely, and replace with AmsOil Synthetic
Drain oil and replace with Mobil1 15/50 and filter
Drain, flush and refill with Jag coolant
Replace all catalytic convertors
Replace metal/wood "ski-slope" in interior with top quality repro with aluminum cups.
Install new custom made English front and rear carpet mats
Replace hood cable and latch
Drain and replace all hydraulic fluids and power steering. Replace power steering pump.
Recharge AC and verify operation
Replace all four wheels with NOS Chrome JAG wheels.
Also, of great note, is I found in Europe, two things the car needed to be first class: I found that in the UK you can still buy the original equipment type Pirelli P600 tires. Nothing comes close in the USA in my opinion. I had them installed less than 1K mile ago.Secondly, I found a NIB Nardi steering wheel for the car, with correct horn. Its a stunner, feels better, and looks much better than the stock ugly airbag wheel. (I may have the original if you want it for whatever reason). Also, the shift T-knob was replaced with the optional JAG wood item, along with cigarette lighter blocking piece. Nice touches.
I will include a top grade California CarCover Co. cover for the car, as well as a pile of literature, and other documentation, which is voluminous.
The door gaskets on both doors need to be replaced, I have them, and they will go with the car. Lastly, the parking brake cable needs adjustment.
All this with parts and labor came to well over $12K. There is no substitute for scrimping on these cars, I suggest anyone not already familiar with a well known Jag enthusiast named Kirby Palm read his masterpiece online by searching for jag-lovers Kirby Palm.He has a pdf there anyone can download, its a masters degree in this car. Everything in there has been done to this car, to the best of my knowledge.
I am selling the car because my job was made redundant and I am now retired much sooner than originally planned. Hence, I need to part with several of my toys. My plan was to drive this several more years. The car runs perfectly, all controls work, it goes like stink, and is truly a gentleman's cruiser, as the Brits say. Made by Jag in a good period, post Leyland and before Ford, the base quality is excellent. The paint is in good shape. No rust, but several fatigue spots in the clearcoat, and the hood as some spotting. The paint however is good, and would not need a repaint for some time. The leather interior is aging. The drivers side could use replacement soon. The burlwood on doors and dash is excellent, some small sunfade. The dash is mint and original. The carpet is mint. All glass is mint, no chips no peeling. Has JAG fog lamps and covers. The battery is a newish Optima, keep on a BatteryTender.
Note, however, the car is is not perfect. It is an old car at this point, no doubt about it, but given the work I have put into it, it should be a reliable runner for quite some time.
All in all there is over 30K invested in bringing this car up to snuff---which anyone who is serious about owning one of these great beauties would have to spend. My reserve is very very reasonable.
