Description

BECAUSE LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DRIVE A BORING CAR!! The Classic Car Gallery 2316 Fairfield Ave Bridgeport, CT 06605 203-446-3477 1988 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 TURBO DIESEL. “WELL SORTED, RUNS AND DRIVES WELL, GREAT TRUCK!!” VIN SALLDVAB8EA332973 Production of the iconic Land Rover Defender series trucks, began in 1983 as the Land Rover 110. The name which reflected the 110-inch (2,?800 mm) length of the wheelbase. The Land Rover 90,? with 93-inch (2,?362 mm) wheelbase,? and Land Rover 127,? with 127-inch (3,?226 mm) wheelbase,? soon followed.[6] Superficially there is little to distinguish the post-1983 vehicles from the Series III Land Rover. A full-length bonnet,? revised grille,? the fitting of wheel arch extensions to cover wider-track axles are the most noticeable changes. Initially the conservative engineering department insisted that the Land Rover was also available with a part-time 4WD system familiar to derivatives produced since 1949. However the part-time system failed to sell and was quickly dropped from the options list by 1984. While the engine and other body panels carried over from the Series III,? mechanically the 90 and 110 were modernised,? including: Coil springs,? offering a more compliant ride and improved axle articulation A permanent four-wheel-drive system derived from the Range Rover,? featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential, a modernised interior, taller one-piece windscreen and a new series of progressively more powerful and modern engines. The 110 was launched in 1983,? and the 90 followed in 1984. From 1984,? wind-up windows were fitted (Series models and very early 110s had sliding panels),? and a 2.5-litre (153 cu in),? 68 horsepower (51 kW) diesel engine was introduced. This engine was based on the earlier 2.3-litre (140 cu in) engine,? but had a more modern fuel-injection system adding to the increased capacity. Additionally, a low compression 3.5-litre (214 cu in) V8 Range Rover engine was offered improved performance. Land Rover began marketing these Defenders as private recreational vehicles. The trucks were incrementally improved and refined from year to year attracting new buyers and encouraging existing owners to trade in for a new vehicle. Changes included different exterior styling graphics and colour options,? and more upscale options such as radio-cassette players,? Rostyle wheels,? headlamp wash systems,? as well as accessories such as surfboard carriers and bike racks. The switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the new model's success. It offered improved off-road ability,? load capacity,? handling and ride comfort. The 2.5 diesel,? 2.5 petrol and Diesel Turbo engines all shared the same block castings and other components such as valve-gear and cooling system parts,? allowing them to be built on the same production line. The Diesel Turbo produced 85 hp (63 kW) and an appreciable increase in torque. Externally,? turbo diesel vehicles differed from other models only by having an air intake grille in the left-hand wing to supply cool air to the turbo. The truck on offer here is a very nice 1988 Land Rover Defender 90. The truck has great style and is ready for any outdoor adventure you can think of. Imported from Italy in early 2019; it is finished in red with factory turbo graphics and a hard top. The truck is powered by its correct (believed to be original) turbocharged 2.5L diesel inline-four and the power is transferred to the ground via its correct 5-speed manual transmission and two-speed transfer case. The truck has its original Safari window hard-top, factory bumpers, lighting, and a trailer hitch. Additional equipment includes three-abreast seating and a set of factory inclinometers. The truck has 16? Land Rover steel wheels shod with 7.50’r16’ Michelin 4X4-O/R tires and an early Range Rover steel wheel with a 205r16 spare tire is fitted on the rear tire carrier. Fold-away steps are provided for the driver, passenger, and rear compartment. Three-abreast seating is provided in the forward compartment, with NEW grey vinyl-upholstered seats, NEW black rubberized mats, and a factory Land Rover-branded steering wheel. The rear compartment is configured for cargo, and is equipped with black rubber floor liners. Instrumentation includes a 150-km/h speedometer, temperature and fuel gauges in the primary cluster, and an engine hour meter (7330 hours), temperature gauge, and a pair of inclinometers mounted in the center of the dash. True mileage is unknown. This truck has been fully sorted mechanically and runs and drives extremely well. The 2.5-liter turbo diesel inline-four was factory-rated at 85 horsepower with 150 lb-ft of torque. It starts and runs well with good power and torque. The truck was just fully serviced, including new fuel tank, fuel pump, new fuel lines, new master cylinder, brake fluid and new drive shaft. Additionally the car got new horns, and LED lights. The underside of the truck is in excellent condition. The frame is solid and looks almost new (clearly restorative work has been done). The Suspension is excellent; all ball joints look fresh and the shocks have been recently replaced. The exhaust system has been replaced as well. The interior is excellent, the seats are new and all interior systems work as they should; there are some cracks on the dash. The paint is a weak point, while it looks nice from a distance, the clear coat is failing in places around the truck. This D90 is and excellent running and driving truck, it has been well sorted, and needs nothing. The truck has a clean Connecticut title.
