Description

NOTICE: PICTURES ARE NOT CURRENT. TAKEN IN JULY 2016 DURING SUMMER. EXTENSIVE SUSPENSION WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED SINCE THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN. =============================================-------------------------------------------------------------------------------History:This MK III was purchased on special order by a Jeweler in California in November of 1969 as a gift for his fiance. Car was equipped with all possible features minus only the optional center console and cruise control. This model MK III was misbuilt in the factory and was equipped with a 1968 ('69 model) deck lid (trunk). As being a 1968 trunk, the car does not have "Continental" on the trunk making it a truly unique piece. The trunk is original, as its serial number matches the rest of the car and there was never an instance in any of my records that any work was ever done on the back half of the car. The car was purchased in green with the upgraded white vinyl roof. The purchaser of the car had a gold plated key specially made for this specific vehicle. The car was driven as a daily driver until 1979 when the driver of this car downgraded to a more fuel efficient daily driver due to the gas crisis at the time. During this car's time as a daily driver, it accumulated approximately 86,000 miles and was in one very minor (not on record) accident in which the owner was backing the car out of their driveway with the driver's side door open and the door clipped a fire hydrant. The door was knocked out of alignment and was moderately misaligned until I had it fixed in October of 2016. The second owner of the car kept it garaged hoping to save it for his retirement as a nice collectors car. While the car was in his possession, it only accumulated another 5,000 miles. Along with not driving the car, the 2nd owner began to rebuild the upper half of the engine, rebuilding the carburetor, and cleaning the whole engine. The final thing the owner did was have the air filter cover chromed for car shows. in 2001 the 2nd owner sold the beautiful Mark III to a close friend of his who happened to be my grandfather. My grandfather also wanted to save this car for his retirement (he never retired). In September of 2001, My grandfather drove this car from California (outside San Francisco) to Toledo Ohio. Upon arriving, the car had 102,000 miles. In 2001, the car was put in storage where it stayed until September of 2015. Over the 14 years the car was in storage, I (and my grandfather for the first few years) regularly visited the car, starting the engine, running it up, and sometimes taking it out for a quick test drive. Around 2013, we started to notice that the car was sitting low on the left side, and that the paint was beginning to crack and flake off the hood. In 2015, a large scratch appeared on the side of the car. I also noticed that there was a single kitten living in the engine of my car. I quickly removed the car from where it was being stored and moved it into my garage where I have since (with the help of professional mechanics) cleaned the cat hair out of the engine, rebuilt the engine, and attempted to rebuild carburetor (after I replaced gaskets it kept flooding. I couldn't figure out why so I purchased a professionally restored 1968 stock carburetor from a Continental with a 460. I still have the original carb and all original and replacement parts boxed in the trunk.) After completing the engine, I had the suspension professionally rebuilt, and then after that, I had the brakes redone. It is important to note that my grandfather purchased many interior, exterior, and internal parts for this car which are in the trunk. These include air filters, arm rests, an extra side view and rear view mirror. He also picked up a dealer manual specific for the maintenance of the MK III and all of the work has been done according to those manuals. Now that the history is done, that brings us to the current condition of the car.=============================================Condition:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Engine:
Currently, the car fires in 1 second or less on a warm day. If it's cold out, it may take 2-3 seconds. The engine currently has no known problems. That being said, the carburetor is not original (read history) and the original one is in the trunk. The current carburetor has not been tuned and either needs to be tuned, or the original carb needs to be rebuilt and put in the current carb's place. I couldn't decide which one to do so I didn't bother yet. Due to the carb not being tuned, the car is currently running very rich. The engine was professionally rebuilt last October. Along with the engine rebuild, the alternator was replaced as it was running weak. The alternator is currently not hooked into the alternator gauge (didn't seem worth the hassle to me) and the battery has been upgraded to a 1000 cold cranking amp deep cell marine battery.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Suspension
The suspension has also been rebuilt and is brand new. Rides like a cloud.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Under carriageThe car has only been in snow once. It encountered a freak snow storm while making its cross country voyage to Ohio. Although the paint is beginning to flake, the undercarriage itself is in immaculate condition and every mechanic who has seen it has praised it. This car's frame and structural integrity are not in question and this part of the car is definitely ready for show.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Interior
The interior is one of the few remaining spots on the car that I have not had worked on. I have not touched it, nor has anyone else. The seats are White Corinthian leather and their condition is as follows Drivers seat: Fair condition Passengers seat: Good condition Rear bench seat: Immaculate condition The driver's seat is worn and white leather shows its wear better than any other type of seat so it doesn't look "great". That being said, the seat leather itself isn't torn, it's just worn and needs conditioning. The passenger's seat is not as worn as the driver's seat. The passenger's seat does not need to be replaced but anyone wanting to make a show car (like myself) will need to condition the leather. The rear seats are in amazing condition. Neither the first nor the second owner ever had anyone in the back seats. I am one of maybe 4 people total who have ever sat in the back of this car. The leather is in beautiful condition and does not need any work whatsoever. The dash is in beautiful shape and there are only two gauges that do not work: The alternator gauge, and the gas gauge. The alternator gauge has already been explained but I don't believe I've touched on the gas gauge. It's simple really. The contacts on the float gauge are not touching. I was going to clean and reset them sometime next month but I hopefully won't have the car by then. Back to the dash, the wood is not pitted chipped or cracked and still has the finish. The chrome is beautiful and everything works fine. One special thing about this car is that not only does the rim blow horn still work (they usually don't) the Cartier clock still works! Cartier clocks never seemed to stay working in the Mark III's but this car is somehow an exception. The only time the clock would ever stop was when the battery was dead (hence why I got a bigger battery. The clock is a real battery eater!) Everything functions great in the radio and the antenna extends just fine. That being said, the driver's side speaker didn't work when the door was misaligned and it still sometime cuts out. This would probably need new wiring but I don't care enough to fix it. (When I'm driving, I don't need the radio, just the sound of the beautiful 460!) The car is equipped with an ash tray and cigarette lighter (or car charger) which pulls out of the middle of the dash. This car also has the original AM/FM radio (with operator's manual), which is large so the ash tray is cut down to a custom size tray. It has never been used as no one has ever smoked in the car but it is annoying if you are trying to charge your phone because it doesn't have anything to keep it from just sliding out of its socket when you open it. I've looked into changing it but once again, I just don't have the time (and it's also not really changeable as it was a design flaw). The car has black shag carpeting. I hate shag carpeting so it's probably a good thing that this car still has the original dealership floor mats in it. Not just the driver's, not just the passenger's, but all three floor mats. Driver, passenger, and rear bench. Great for keeping the car clean and making it a real head turner at shows. The side view mirror is currently not adjustable and in a fixed position. I have a replacement mirror, but I like where the current one is at and just like everything else, I don't have the time or will to change it--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Exterior.I don't really feel like describing each individual scratch. Just understand that if you buy this car, it will most definitely need new paint. I know it still looks pretty good from the pictures, but the condition of the car will only deteriorate if it does not receive a new coat of paint to protect it. Paint is beginning to crack on the hood and is cracking on the deck lid. It is beginning to peel off the sides of the car as well. When the paint peels off, it reveals bare metal, and although it was nice to see that there isn't rust under the paint, the bare metal quickly became rusty when exposed to the humid summer air. The vinyl is in great shape and unlike many other MK III's for sale, I've returned my vinyl roof to the original white through some tough scrubbing. The roof isn't supposed to be tan, if you see a MK III with a tan roof, please tell the owner to clean their roof for me. Thanks. The chrome on the exterior is in excellent condition and will not need any work whatsoever. The tires are also not in need of replacement. They're currently low from storage and I really don't want to drive it out on the salty roads to go get air in them. If you buy this car. You should have it shipped rather than picking it up as to keep the nice car off the dirty roads...=============================================Other:

The sun roof works great. In some pictures it may not look fully closed, it's not. I leave the sunroof cracked on most nice days in the summer to help keep the car cool (save the leather)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q: Can I see the underside of the car?A: If I had pre-existing photos, I'd post them. If I find photos of the underside (I do have some somewhere) I'll post them in this advert. I'm not going to climb under the car and take pictures again, sorry :(--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q: Are the photos current?A: No. The photos I posted are from July. The car is currently under a cover in my garage. This shows the car before it went under its major mechanical restoration. The car sits to one side in these photos because the suspension needed work. It no longer leans.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q: can you deliver?A: Short Distances Only. If you live near Toledo (not any further than halfway to Detroit) I'll consider delivering. I'm getting tired of people who are out of country asking me to set up deliveries. I am not an international car dealer.=============================================Other notes:- I am selling this car to pay for a plane and/or a private pilot's license. If you have any aircraft or flight lessons you want to trade, I'll consider :) . I'll also consider some muscle car trades and I will accept a trade on a Blue Mercury Marauder.
If you've made it this far, Thanks so much for reading. A lot of time has gone into this post, and this car. I hope you like it as much as I have and I really do hope you want it. It's a beautiful car and it deserves someone who has the time to take care of it as I no longer do. =============================================--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
