1964 Lotus Elan S2 (Type 26), 26/4050

If you’re looking for an Elan that you can drive right now and enjoy, this may be the car for you. Being RHD I encourage buyers from Japan, Australia, Great Britain, and all other countries who drive on “The Correct Side” to bid, and I will help you as much as I can to facilitate shipping.

This car was last painted in the 1970’s and is still shiny and wearing it’s period fender flares, but it also has it’s share of stress cracks etc. For those who wish to go back to original fender flares I have included a set from an original Type 26 you can fiberglass back on, or maybe you want to put 26R flares on and build a tribute car. The main reason I never painted this car is because I wanted to enjoy driving it without worrying about rock chips, accidental contact, etc. If you purchase the car you can decide if you want to drive it as is, or you can finish the car to your standards, and your choice of colo(u)r.

This car is sitting on a Spyder chassis and has a rope seal (4 bolt) crank twincam with 2 groove Sprint cams, Pertronics ignition, an alternator, a high torque starter, and headers. A custom Aluminum radiator keeps the car running cool. The transmission shifts smooth and makes no noises, and has wide ratio gears. Also included with the car is a set of nice semi-close ratio gears. The differential has 3:90 gears and has all new seals, and it’s coupled to new CV joint rear axles, which run through new Spyder hub carriers, with new rear struts, and new rear small diameter adjustable rear springs. All of the calipers and rotors are in great shape, and the car stops as it should.

The interior has the gator hide flooring, and nice seats and door panels and all switches and gauges work properly. Gauges and fuel sender were all rebuilt by Nisonger. Included is the original combination gauge (not installed and needs rebuilding). Some personal liberty was taken when redoing the dash including extra gauges which I personally find a better layout than stock, but you can go back to a stock layout if you wish. This car has a vintage Moto Lita steering wheel with the original horn button. Because the hood (bonnet) has vintage British hood pins the hood release cables are not attached. The choke cable is also not attached and to be honest isn’t needed but it’s in the dash. Never needed the heater, but it’s installed and works, as do the wipers, and fan motor. Included is the original vacuum switch for the headlight pods. They currently operate off of a solenoid and vacuum lines.

The trunk (boot) has an Aluminum fuel tank with rebuilt sending unit, a spare tire on an original wheel, tool kit, a jack (not original), and the correct trunk mat. The fuel filler is from a TR3 but included is the correct S1 type fuel filler. You’ll notice this an early S2 so it correctly has most of the Elan 1600 features like the trapezoid pedals, flat finger lifts, tail lights, fuel filler, etc. Called a transition car they were produced starting in Nov of 1964 and from what I know there were only 227 produced from unit 3901 to 4127. Approx 50% were RHD and the biggest difference between a North American spec (Federal) and Non-Federal spec cars was the tail lights. Federal cars had a reflector and 2 tail lights on each side, and the others only had 2 tail lights on each side. The tail lights are also different Lucus units between Federal and Non-Federal cars. Non-Federal cars also had a high beam stalk instead of floor switch which this car has and it works.

The soft top is in great shape with all the bows and cantrails. Also include is a tonneau cover which is still useable, however it was modified to fit around a roll bar at one time.

Keys – I have a trunk and ignition key. The doors and glove box do not have keys but I’m sure someone can key them for you. Locking either one is not really going to protect anything, but I guess it’s something some might want.

Please note the original painted nose badge that so many cars are missing and an original Walnut gear shift knob with brass insert and brass nut.

The wheels are Panasport 13x 5, with 175/70-13 Sumitomo tires that are 4 years old with lots of tread left.

Personalized Black Plate is negotiable. FYI, the front plate pivots up and out of the way when driving from wind pressure and returns to position shown when standing still.
