Description

1993 Mazda RX7
A little history on this car…..I am sad to see this car go to the next caretaker however life changes and it's time for someone else to enjoy the car. This 1993 FD Rx-7 Touring has been in my family since 2002. The car has a clean title and has never been in an accident. The car is HEAVILY documented with paperwork/receipts going back to when the car was new. The first owner was a doctor in Salt lake city that bought the car for his wife as a birthday present back in 1993. By the late 90’s his family was growing so they decided to trade the car off….the car was sold to another gentleman in Utah then it was put on eBay in 2002 where my uncle purchased the car. Fast forward to April of 2017 and my uncle finally decides to sell the car to me. Keep in mind the car had only been driven a total of 2500 miles since 2002 so all the maintenance had to be brought up to spec so I would have a nice, RELIABLE fd to drive. As of right now the car has 50,650 miles on it! This car is for the person that wants to actually be able to drive a nice stock example that delivers an amazing stock driving experience without worrying about getting a paint chip! I
Cosmetics……The car cosmetically is all stock with the exception of the front lip spoiler. I did buy and install an OEM Mazda R1 style lip spoiler for it, I prefer the look, however the next owner will get the original touring lip in case they want to put the stock one back on. The car does have OEM mudguards on it. All switches in the car work, the power mirrors, cruiser control, fan, ac, power windows, sunroof, ect….. Pop up headlights work like new!
The car did get an exterior repaint around 2000-2001 in the original vintage red paint, I did reach out to the previous owner to ask him about the repaint. There were no accidents or body damage but the the original paint had some flaws and imperfections/scratches so he did have a local shop in Utah give it a fresh coat of paint. He said he was very picky and just wanted the car to be "perfect" for him. Being as the paint job was done 20 plus year ago, it does match the age of the car and I for a very long time didn't even realize it had an early repaint. There is a couple spots, in the door hinge area and fender wells with some very light overspray, light paint ridges. The door jams, engine bay, ect...are all original paint.
The paint/body is in great shape as it has been garaged since new….keep in mind though the car is 30 years old…..there may be a LIGHT scratch or chip here and there. A light buffing wouldn’t hurt. The car has been driven, there were a few small chips on the car when I bought it that I used touchup paint on, speaking of which the touchup paint I had getting old so I just bought a fresh bottle of touchup paint for the next owner!
The sunroof operates just like it did new and does not leak.
Being the car has low mileage and has been garaged its whole life there is no cancer/rust or even really any corrosion on the car….Its as clean as you would expect for a 30 year old sports car that’s been taken care of.
The car does include a car cover, nothing fancy but it does keep the dust off!
Interior……….The standard Leather seats that come with the touring package are still in great shape (and have an awesome leather smell to them) with just a little bit of wear on the lower drivers side bolster that seems to be pretty common. Still has the original floor mats with the “RX-7” logo in them.
I did install a Sony MEX-N5300BT single din head unit as the original Bose CD player decided to quit working and the radio was on its way out. The original radio/CD player will go with the car. Perhaps there’s someone out there that can do repairs on the old bose units? The head unit was ordered from Crutchfield as well as the harness adapter, antenna coupler and output converter. There was ZERO modifications to the cars harness or anything else so you can always just remove it and plug back in the stock head units. When I installed the Sony deck I did not reinstall the wire for the power antenna, I did however mark the wire with a piece of tape so if you wanted to use AM/FM you can easily do so. I just think the power antenna looks a bit odd when deployed and I just use Blue Tooth anyway. After installing the new Sony deck I don’t think I would go back anyway as the Sony head unit still looks more or less period correct but has blue tooth, CD player, satellite radio capability ect….I love the Bose acoustic wave sound system. The acoustic system is not by any means the best performing system out there (remember its 30 years old) however I just love the look of the speaker tube system and it just adds “cool factor”. The speaker system is completely stock and in good shape. The new head unit works with it just fine.
The original yellow spare tire is there in perfect condition as it has never been used. All tire changing tools appear to be there as well. (Including the locking lug nut tool)
The passenger side door “grab handle” Bezel area does have some blemishing on it. Mazda used a light textured coating that scratches and blemishes really easy. I was always going to find some new textured paint that matched and fix it but just never got around to it.
The car does have a Clifford alarm system that has been in the car since the 90’s. I am honestly not even sure how to work it. I live in a safe area and the car is always inside the garage. There is a fob for it that goes with the car. Whenever I don’t drive the car for a few months or put it away for winter I always pull the inline fuse for the alarm otherwise the alarm system will discharge the battery.
No cracks in the dash or anywhere else in the interior. All gauges work as they should.
Mechanical……..The car did spit out an Apex seal back in the late 1990’s so previous owner had bought a brand new Mazda 13b long block and had it swapped it in. (I know that thanks to the cars awesome documentation!) The car had 32,142 miles on it when that was done. I’m not entirely sure what caused the engine failure but the engine has been great since. Even though the factory OMP system is still present I have always run .5 ounce per gallon of Idemitsu racing premix. The engine starts cold and hot with ease. Runs very strong, I regularly drive the car and from work... a 2 hour drive and the car has never let me down!
If I were a buyer I wouldn’t hesitate to fly in then drive the car home.
When I bought the car I wanted everything to be fresh so I could count on the car…..I wanted to show people when taken taken care of these cars were not only a blast to drive but also reliable. As soon as I took possession I brought the car down to my local shop….he has a lot of turbo JDM experience.
We started off with preventative maintenance. - Fuel filter- All new rubber fuel lines- New FPD- All cooling system hoses replaced- New water pump, thermostat and cap- Flushed cooling system- New spark plug wires- New NGK spark plugs- New Fluidyne radiator- New Aluminum AST installed- IAC cleaned and TPS adjusted to spec- Amzoil in the rear diff- Amzoil in the Trans- Valvoline VrR-1` engine oil
Now when I got the car there were a few issues, rough idle, small exhaust leak and brakes were spongy. So the following was done- Sequential turbo setup was removed and there was a broken stud or bolt(can’t remember which) found causing the exhaust leak. A replacement was found and the whole turbo assembly was gone over to make sure it was ready for action.
- Since the turbo setup was removed I had the exhaust manifold ceramic coated to lower under hood temps.- All Exhaust gaskets replaced with new OEM Mazda gaskets. All the nuts were replaced as well, again OEM Mazda parts $$$- The rough idle was caused by a bad vacuum hose so I ordered a complete vacuum line kit with much better quality lines than stock. Every line under the hood was replaced. The car is still stock running all lines, the turbo setup is still sequential like it was out of the factory. The next owner should not have to worry about the rats nest for a VERY long time.- Brand new brake master cylinder was sourced, whole system bled. Even though there was no signs of leaking I also replaced the clutch slave cylinder as well. Both the brake and clutch pedal function like new. - I had him install the Y-pipe upgrade kit
A couple months ago the 5th gear synchro started acting up so I quit driving it and ordered a new synchro and spring upgrade….at the same time I also had a shifter rebuild kit installed. - He removed trans, replaced the synchro and installed the upgraded spring. He inspected the clutch while the trans was out (it was fine). Then reassembled everything and put some fresh Amzoil gear oil in it. It now works like new again and with the spring upgrade it should not be a problem every again. - I didn’t have any problems with the shifter but figured since the trans was out I just had him install the shifter rebuild kit (aluminum shifter bushing). Shifter works like new.
The tires were in good shape however were getting old so a month ago I bought a brand new set of stock sized replacement Kumho Ecsta tires. I like how they act on the road. Plenty of grip in the curves. Tires were balanced and front end alignment was checked.
Upgrades…….I know these were already listed but just a recap of the upgrades (reliability mods done)- Fluidyne aluminum radiator- Aluminum AST- Upgraded high quality rats nest hose kit……every single vacuum line under the hood was replaced as well as new replacement OEM check valves.- Previous owner installed downpipes (precat delete)- Upgraded Y-Pipe - Ceramic coated the exhaust manifold to reduce under hood heat- Modified intake duct so that the air box doesn’t steal cool air from the intercooler. From the outside the airbag still looks stock.- Upgrades trans synchro parts
Documentation…….As mentioned earlier this car has a ton of documentation. The previous owners were pretty good at holding onto receipts/paperwork and I am huge on documentation so I have receipts for almost all work/parts that have ben done/installed on the car. Just from myself alone I have $7000.00-$8000.00 in receipts for parts/labor done to the car.
This car includes- Original owners manual and warranty manual with original owners name wrote in the warranty section.- Original sales brochure for the car.
There are receipts from the early 90’s for things like oil changes and dealer recalls. There is even the receipt there for the cars very first service/oil change in 1993 when the car had around 1400 miles on it! There are receipts for work done in the late 1990s including the receipt for a new Mazda 13b long block that was installed. Long story short the car has docs going back to when it was sold new, a very solid/known history for it being a 30 year old sports car.
For the next owner I just printed off a fresh carfax report that shows the owners in Utah as well as my Uncle and Myself. Zero issues with the title or carfax. There are lower milage LHD FD’s out there (for MORE money) but this one delivers a stock driving experience with the added benefit maximum reliability.
Driving experience……….A few thoughts I have on the car after spending time with it these last few years. After you get done drooling over the outside of this car you plant yourself in the driver seat. You have to watch the doors as they are long and swing out quite a way. When you close the door you crack a window open so that the door shuts easier….the cockpit is so small the air inside fights the door. As you sit there you realize just how driver focused the car really is. All the gauges and controls are designed around the driver, delivering a true cockpit feeling. You look out to see the fenders curve into the hood. The door buzzer and smell of the leather are unique to the car. The car cranks over for a second before brapping to life……hot or cold it starts easily. The engine is almost completely vibration less, such a smooth hum from under the hood. The clutch does take some getting used to as with the rotary there is not a lot of torque off idle. Once you get rolling the primary turbo provides boost until about 4000-4500 rpm when the secondary turbo takes over until redline. The lack of traction control and stability control remind you that the car is in charge and it can very easily get away from you…..especially true in the rain. The shifter is incredibly firm and has a nice short throw for it being a 30 year old car. The steering is tight and has a bit of weight to it, it’s not as light of steering as most modern sports cars but gives a more direct feeling to the road. The handling is predictable and stable. You approach the corner and just aim the nose to where you want to go. The 50/50 weight distribution makes you feel like race car driver. You do need to be mindful of the rpm and throttle position as if that secondary turbo kicks in mid corner it can lead to a quick case of oversteer. The car has a firm ride, its not as plush as modern sports cars but to be honest it adds to the raw sports car experience….one more thing that connects you to the road. It gets a lot of looks at gas station and a lot of questions.....”I can’t believe its a 93?!” “Why are you putting oil in the gas tank?” “Does the engine break down a lot?” “A stock FD?!” Haha, most people are genuinely curious about the car. Its the most unique car I’ve ever owned up to this point and I’ll always have fond memories of the car.
Conclusion…….I’m sorry for having such a lengthy description but I just want whoever owns the car next to know as much as possible and to see that it has been cared for and loved. Even with everything wrote I am positive there are things that I forgot and would be more than happy to answer any questions to any potential buyers out there. I do really hope that the next care taker of this car does stay in touch and would love to see pictures of it in its new home! If you can see yourself driving this car and want a nice clean original example that you can actually drive then this is the car for you!
I do have an appraisal that was recently done that I would be happy to email to any interested parties. The car did appraise at $33,750!
I do have a clean title in hand, the buyer must recognize that I have described the car to the best of my knowledge however it is still a 30 year old sports car with no warranty. Deposit is non refundable. If you are local, I welcome you to inspect the car before you buy. Again I’d be happy to speak with anybody on the phone that has any questions or concerns. If you do want to fly in and drive it home I'd be happy to help you make arrangements, like getting you picked up from the airport and over to my place. (about 40 min from Rapid City)
$500 Deposit required right away. If you send me a check to pay the balance that is fine as long as everybody is on the same page that payment must be clear before the car or title leaves my possession.
Buyer is responsible for shipping but I will assist in any way that I can.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my car and hope to hear from you!
