SLIGHTED SLs
Ron Gaubert from Lafayette, Louisiana, wrote to let us know that "The 1983 to 1985 Mercedes 500 SL is somewhat neglected in the press because some do not realize that this was a limited-production car, with only about 11,000 made." Ron is right. There's never much written about these special automobiles, perhaps because, besides the emblem on the trunk lid, there's nothing that identifies it as such.
end island Ron writes: "The difference in the 380 SL, 450 SL and even the 560 SL is the engine size. Most of the 380, 450, and 560 SLs had only 185hp while the Euro 500 SL put out almost 250hp, with this huge V-8. For a roadster, this is significant. While the body styles are similar, the engine makes this a unique car."
