1971 Mercedes 450SL, One Prior Owner, 48k Miles, All ORIGINAL, A/C, CONCOURS!!
Description
Looking for the best original first year, small bumper 450SL? This may be it. This is a rust free, nearly all original paint (part of the front passenger fender and a small portion of the passenger door were touched up in the early 80's). The interior is ALL original, carpet, seats, door panels, dash, steering wheel, etc. Just about perfect in all respects.
The Signal Red (Paint Code 568) paint looks perfect almost everywhere you look. It seems impossible for the original paint to look so fantastic, but it is! We had the best detailer wet sand the original paint to make it look this nice. The chrome and rubber are excellent. Only the one rubber threshold mat could be replaced, but we've chosen to keep it original. Otherwise, the interior is fantastic.
Mechanically, several Mercedes experts and owners will attest that this as the nicest driving 450SL they've experienced. The 1982 factory recall of the subframe was never done. Schumacher Mercedes in Scottsdale, AZ performed the recall this year, flying in a new subframe from Europe. We bought all new engine and transmission mounts and other components and it now rides like a brand new 450SL.
No expense was spared to make this like new while keeping the car original. Look at the engine compartment photos carefully. The radiator is original as is pretty much everything under the hood. We spent hundreds of dollars and hours detailing the engine compartment.
It was built at the factory on April 18th 1972. This is one of the first 450SL's brought into the US. This 450 was bought new at Loeber Motors, Inc. in Lincolnwood, Illinois on June 29th, 1972. We bought it from the first owners family in his last days before passing. He had many great cars and the family referred to this car as the "Red Car". While his Ferrari and other fancy cars were all sold over the years, they kept the 450SL. It was stored in a garage since from about 1985 until 2016. The radials on the car when we bought it were dated from 1985, and were brand new (but horribly cracked). It now has new Michelin radials installed on freshly painted wheels with new factory lug nuts.
The only known issues are the heater core, which needs to be replaced to work well. The A/C works well but needs to be recharged (we haven't used it once in 1.5 years since it was charged and functioning). The car will be sold with the fully restored original factory hardtop, hardtop stand, factory sales brochure, all service receipts from the recommissioning, etc.
Call Harry Clark with questions or comments on my cell phone at 602-245-7200. Or feel free to email me. The car is located here in Paradise Valley, AZ and can be inspected at any time.
