1982 Mercedes 500 SEC
Description
I’ve owned this car since 1997. It was fully optioned as a hand built special order vehicle in Germany and is very rare. It is definitely the only one like it in the United States. Even though the 500 SECs were highly desirable, they were not available in the US until the 1985 model (which is somewhat different from the 1982 model). The most interestingly unique option on this car is a single cylinder gasoline engine located on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It is computer controlled from the center console to come on at whatever time you set and heats the engine block and interior of the car. The engine was also a special order high performance version 5 liter V8. I have not had this car on a dyno, but the standard version was rated at over 300 hp. The tires are old but still serviceable, mounted on special order Lorenzer chrome wheels, upgraded from the standard wheels. Performance wise, it will do 160 mph, and is very fast from 0-60 mph. As can be seen from the photos, the factory clear coat is peeling. The leather at the top of the back seats is split. When I had the rear window replaced, the worker put his elbows on the leather and split it trying push the old window out. Otherwise, the interior is in good shape, and the leather is beautifully petinaed with matching blue sheepskin front seat covers and factory floor mats. It has factory option chrome wheel well trim, rear reflector panel between the tail lights, sun roof, heated seats, and individual climate controls. It has factory dual exhaust with “H” pipes and twin catalytic converters (installed for US emissions). Brake pads and rotors are good. New battery, spark plugs and wires. Nothing is missing. The VIN is in the door frame photo.WDB12604412000884The door frame sticker indicates a 1984 date. The title clearly shows 1982. Mercedes says that the VIN is correctly 1982. The sticker shows the date the car was imported and modified for required US emissions. This was originally considered a “grey market” car when legally imported. It is currently clear titled in Arizona and no longer requires emissions, due to the age of the vehicle.
