Description

Mercedes-Benz S-Class . Condition is Used. 1990. The car is in overall average condition with normal wear and tear. Does not really have any rust other then some light surface rust where paint has come off.
Engine- Starts instantly in any type of weather. Has no blow by. Does not smoke or knock. Runs excellent. I purchased around 5 years ago for a friend of mine that owned it for two years then my brother owned it for two years and i now have had it about a year. When it was originally purchased it had oil in the coolant. In the past five years it has been driven about 30k miles (?) and has always had a little bit of oil migrate to the coolant. The coolant has been flushed annually and doesn't seem to have gotten any worse in that time. We have determined that it must have a head gasket leak between an oil passage and a coolant passage. It does not really consume any oil or coolant. I purchased a head gasket for it as well as a timing chain and head bolts but have never gotten around to putting a head gasket on it. It is one of those things that other then oil in the coolant it doesn't seem to effect anything.
The engines on these have a very poor reputation and are subject to bent rods etc.,. This one seems to be fine except for the head gasket issue. As mentioned no blow by or engine noises. It is the straight six turbo diesel 3.5 liter. If it had the bent rod problem I would think it would have reared its ugly head by now if it was going to happen.
Transmission- Fluid was flushed five years ago and the tranny shifts as it should. Rear end was flushed at the same time.
Tires are probably 4 years old and have plenty of tread.
Brakes seem to be fine
Air conditioning worked fine this past summer
Interior- Seats and interior in average condition although some trim pieces have been falling off and need to be glued back on. I have had it stored in my pole barn for the last year and have not really driven it very much.
It drives really well especially on the highway
Stereo was all replaced about 5 years ago including speakers head unit and bass unit in trunk.
Body has no rust. I believe the top of the car was repainted at one time. It looks pretty good couple of little dings but very presenatable.
I believe someone could just "drive" the car as is and get quite a bit of use out of it. However, due to the history of these cars and the age it is anyone's guess as to how long it would last. If you were mechanical and wanted to fix the head gasket it should last indefinitely and is in good enough condition to do that. I am starting at $1000 with no reserve. It is probably worth a lot more then that just in parts.
The fuel shut off solenoid recently failed and I installed a manual shut off which is a pull type plunger under the key switch.
