Rarity can dictate values, and in collector-car circles, the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a mighty elusive badge to find, especially one that had been in the former owner’s garage for more than 30 years like the one you see here, which has a fantastic undercarriage.

This exclusivity which drives the collector-car market is especially apparent with the ’71 model year. Here’s why:Only 830 Mercedes-Benz 280SL’s were built in ’71, which became the final year of production for the two-seat luxury convertible that was commonly known as the Pagoda for its unique-looking removable top design. By making way for the W107 series from Mercedes-Benz, the ’71 became an instant icon for all things good about this German automaker.

And while the ’71 280SL has stunning good-looks inside and out, most true Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts will tell you, it's the drivability of the 280SL that matters most, and this car has plenty of performance to go around.

The drivability of the ’71 W113.044 chassis is beyond approach, it simply mesmerizes the driver thanks to its responsive 2.8-liter inline-6 cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel-injection, single overhead camshaft and cast alloy rocker arm cover. The linear power curve coming from its 2778cc engine serves up a smooth, yet thrilling ride and is off-set with assurance by four-wheel disc brakes.

This ’71 behaves as a two-seater of this vintage should, refined at speed and well-balanced with no white-knuckle oversteer or understeer tendencies found in other roadsters. Perhaps this sense of balance comes from the lower center-of-gravity ride, or its excellent independent front and rear suspension system. The fact that Mercedes-Benz outfitted this ’71 280SL with aluminum and sheetmetal body panels certain attributes to its craftsmanship as a pure driver’s car.

Let’s look at some of the details of the car with VIN 12019576.

  • 79,000 miles showing on factory odometer.
  • Documented restoration.
  • Four-speed factory automatic transmission.
  • Factory red paint finish with Cognac interior.
  • Becker “Europa” radio
  • Two different tops.
  • Factory original tool roll.
  • Factory original jack tool.
  • Spare wheel and tire.
  • Factory original owner’s manual.
  • New ignition rotor.
  • New ignition points.
  • New ignition wire set.
  • New Bosch plugs.
  • New Mahle oil filter.
  • Book of maintenance and repair records.

This ’71 280SL comes with some detailed records of the work that’s been done to it through the years. In the early 1990s, the car was lovingly cared for at The Painter’s Edge in Ontario, where the it originated from. While there, it was completly stripped and painted and brought to investment-grade condition. Prior to that some of Ontario’s finest classic-car facilities have contributed to the current look and overall performance of the vehicle, as noted in documents that come with the vehicle.

When you consider that a 280SL of this era is often viewed as a decendent of sorts of the most notable of all SL lines, the 300SL Gullwing Coupe, which is nearly unattainable today with values reaching six figures, that puts into perspective why the time to invest in a ’71 280SL is today.

About Factory Correct Cars offered by BlueChip Motorcars

BlueChip Motorcars periodically offers classic cars that may be listed as Factory Correct, or Numbers Matching. Because there are many opinions about the term(s) used to describe these types of listings, allow us to explain how BlueChip Motorcars comes to that assessment.

As you may know, depending on the source, the term “matching numbers, or factory correct,” may mean many things to many people. Purists might define it as a car with every possible window crank, dash knob or even every nut and bolt is original to the car from the time it left the production line. Although some classic cars do exist in that rare condition, most do not.

The majority of classic cars on the market were at some point in their ownership, restored or repaired with NOS parts (new old stock) or licensed reproduction parts. Whenever the information is available to us about the use of these parts, BlueChip Motorcars will gladly pass it along to the potential buyer.

BlueChip Motorcars uses the term Factory Correct or Numbers Matching only to distinguish a vehicle where the engine casting code corresponds with the VIN and Cowl Tag code. If these codes tell the same story about the car in question, BlueChip Motorcars then considers it to be a Factory Correct or Numbers Matching vehicle. However, unless otherwise stated, the transmission, rear end, and transmission may or may not be original to the car.

BlueChip Motorcars welcomes all potential buyers to verify all the information with a qualified expert. We would be happy to email you all the numbers that are obtainable on any vehicle where the term Factory Correct or Matching Numbers is used.
