This 600 was delivered new to to J.W. Dickie at Stahl Motors in Monterey, California. Mr. Dickie used the it as a regular commuter to and from Los Angeles. He made the trip frequently and put around 140k miles on the car by 1974, when it was placed in storage and allowed to sit for a number of years. He serviced the car religiously at Stahl Motors as is evidenced by the service booklet. The subsequent owners were all in the surrounding area (Santa Cruz and Pebble Beach). I purchased this car in 2014 and drove it home from Santa Cruz. Since 1974 only 14,000 miles have been put on the car but it has benefited greatly from its caring owners. Theinterior is completelyoriginal and still even has its drivers floor mat in pristine condition.
The car has had a respray in its correct 573G Bordeaux Red paint. 573G is an extremely rare color to see on a 600, typically you will see the standard 542G Dunkelrot or Dark Red. The respray is good at best. While it looks excellent from a few feet back, when inspectedclosely you can see why it is not a concours paint job. There are areas that could be fixed by a professional cutting and buffing at the paint. There is flaking on the drivers door front edge and there is also a chip that has been touched up above the passenger windshield area.
Thehydraulic systemhas been gone through this year. The car received freshly rebuilt window switches on all four doors as well as a rebuilt hydraulic accumulator. There is no evidence of leaks.
The air suspension was gone through by the previous owner but the valves do slowly leak over the period of about 3-4 weeks ifleft in the normal position.
The drivetrain on the car is excellent. I have taken this car on numerous long haul trips and it has always performed well. It willcruise comfortably at 80 MPH all day long. The motor is strong and very responsive. The transmission shiftsfirmly and crisply as the KB4-050 is supposed to. Being a very early production car (#421) thisparticular car benefits from having the more desirable high compression 6.3 liter V8. That being said, there are a few slow oil leaks and typical seepage from the transmission.
The chrome on the car is mostlyoriginal and in very nice shape. There are a few light scratches and one small outward ding on one ofthewheel arches. These are not obvious and mostly hard to notice. The rear bumper has been rechromed and has had the backside painted properly just as the factory did.
The interior is completely original and is in very impressive shape. There are a few cracks in the leather but all are surface cracks except for the one on the right side of the drivers seat bottom. The leather, carpets and wood are all impressive through out. The wood does have a few areas where the finish has begun to flake, but he veneer is all completely intact and excellent. A few door caps and smallerpieces display the finish cracking/flaking aswell as theedges ofthe dash bow and binnacle. I think the pictures do a good job showing thebeauty oftheinterior but if you have specific questions please email me.
The exhaust is one item that will need attention soon. There are leaks towards the front ofthe system and I have not looked into it yet. It is solid, but assume that some repairs will be needed. It is a bit onthe loud side currently dueto theleaks. Another issue that I have noticed isthat at low speed (parkinglots for example) the steering becomes a little jerky. This is not noticeable at normal driving speeds. I am toldthat the power steering system should be bled and that will most likely improve the issue.
