When it comes to vintage automobiles, California and the West Coast of the United States have always been the most desirable the world over for many reasons; the mild climate and the fact that many automotive trends started in California. The automobile is the perfect technological symbol of American culture, a tangible expression of our quest to level space, time, and class and a reflection of our relentless mobility, social and otherwise. You see automobiles advertised the world over described as California cars because at some point they were in California or drove through California. A true California car is one that was sold new in California and titled in California, one that has the original plates that are on that title is a true California car.We are liquidating a collection of 300 actual California cars. This is a collection that took 70 years to comprise. Most have the original paint and original California licence plates issued to them when they were new.

Up for bid today is a rare find, an original 1940 Mercury Eight Coupe this California Barn find has been a Oakland native for the last 79 years being sold new at Bob Phillipi Mercury, 4200 East 14th street in deep East Oakland.

The Mercury Eight was marketed by the Mercury division of Ford between 1939 and 1951. The debut model line of the Mercury division, Ford slotted the full-size Mercury Eight between the Ford Deluxe model lines and the Lincoln. The present owners father had his eye on this one from day one, when the time came, he grabbed it and added it to his then growing collection, sadly the restoration was 95% complete but left in near perfect condition for the next owner to finish this work of art.

The 1940 is Ford Coupe is arguably one of the most iconic body styles that was ever made it share a lot of the same DNA with the 1940 Mercury coupe but by itself a much rarer of a unique and iconic classic that will never be duplicated. This is a unique opportunity to own a classic piece of American history. This example is an original California car from new with the same black plates that were first issued mandatory in 1963. The last time this car was registered for California roads at the same a few miles across the bay was the Flower children and the “Summer of Love” think about that a minute . This car has been stored in a giant building for decades, I was told it had a complete respray of the original in the 1980's, it also had the Flatheadhead 8 rebuilt, it runs and drives fantastic however it still need to be completely put together as some of the trim has been replaced but not yet fully installed, this was last touched in the 80's but the 79 year old rare classic has been stored professionally for over 50 years. You will be hard pressed .to be able to duplicate this automobile anywhere. An original California car from new of a very rare model that is in remarkable condition. Don’t mis out on this unique opportunity bid to buy no reserve

Cosmetically please let the the photos speak for themselves, this car is in fantastic condition overall which is amazing for a nearly 80 year old example. The body is very straight with no dents or scratches anddefinitelyno rust. This car has spent its life indoors in a mild climate which has done wonders to the preservation of this car. All the chrome is original and shinesfantasticmuch of which has been re plated. Some of the trim and interior pieces have yet to be reinstalled.
Mechanically this car is in fantastic condition, even though the total miles on this coupe are just 66578 the flat head V8 was rebuilt back in the 80's and has realisticallyless than a few hundred miles. She fires up and run's great, the engine has good power and pulls strong the 3 speed manual shifts good with no grinding or any vibrations just smooth as it was designed. All the gaugesseem to be in good working order with a dash that is a true work of art with all of the gauges seem to be in good working order. The interior is all original, the seats have covers on them and you can see the original seat coming through, it does need a little finishing to be in show condition but overall a real time capsule from a different time in history that has been preserved in very nice original condition.
