GOLD IS WHERE YOU FIND IT ...

HELLO, MG ENTHUSIASTS!

I am parting with a few of my cars, and moving north to the land of pine trees and potatoes (you guessed it ... Idaho)! It's been nice surfing the shores of SouthernCalifornia in the 60's and raising our family here, but things have changed. So we're moving on up to be near the grand kids in a State that has less people than greaterSan Diego!

RARE, ORIGINAL MGB

I've never been able to resist a nice, original car with history, so for your consideration, is this fine Bronze Yellow, original finish 1971 MGB Roadster. I found this little gem just north of San Francisco, and was amazed to discover that this car is fortunate to have a FACTORY ORIGINAL FINISH. It has never been repainted. My mechanic, who ran a compression test on the car, looked it over closely and agreed that the paint is original. He is a collector of nine classics, familiar with the oldie but goodies, and said, of all my cars, this was his favorite!

HISTORY AND DOCUMENTATION

Among the photographs that follow you will see a very detailed Expense Record Booklet. This record was kept by the previous owner over a 20 period from the date of his purchase in 11/95 to 6/7/15. It details the odometer reading, miles traveled, amount and cost of gasoline for EVERY purchase, oil and lube expenses and much more. The odometer read 28,601 miles at time of his purchase and 62,274 miles at the end of the booklet. Currently the odometer shows 62,775 miles.

Also shown in the photographs is a 2-page (front and back) Purchase Expense Summary. This recording shows, year by year, over $7,900 invested. Finally, there is that incredible large 3-ring blue binder filled with over 140 individual receipts and other paperwork that support much of the work recorded in the Expense Record and the Purchase Expense Summary. These records are not just thrown loosely into the noteboook. Rather, each document, however large or small, was carefully hole punched and inserted into the binder rings.

A look at all these records shows a very detail oriented MG enthusiast who loved his car. I am convinced he was probably a left-brained individual who also kept his shoes lined up in the closet perfectly when he went home at night!

PLEASE NOTE: Among the last receipts in the blue notebook are a few that go back to as early as 1987. They document the odometer miles to have been 23,250 at

that date. The previous owner must have received these when he purchased the car. WITHOUT DOUBT, THE ABOVE IS THE MOST EXTENSIVE AND WELL ORGANIZEDCOLLECTION OF RECORDS BY ANY SINGLE OWNER THAT I'VE EVER SEEN!

COSMETICS

When you get a chance, look at the shut-lines in some of the photographs that follow. In them, you will see the superb, factory original fit of the passenger door, hood and trunk. The driver door could be adjusted outward just slightly to be up to the standards of the rest of the car. Otherwise, it doesn't get much better than this!

Another remarkable thing about this fine automobile are the FACTORY ORIGINAL FLOORS, which are in absolutely superb condition (see photographs). In addition, the jack mounts are solid, the boot bone dry, and the wheel wells without cancerous rust. The advantage of original paint, is that nothing can be hidden. I have able to find one smaller area of rust under the paint low down, in the driver rear dogleg ONLY. Otherwise, dry as a bone! An individual dogleg can sometimes develop thiskind of localized rust when one of the little drain holes for that fender plug up over time.

All chrome, glass, rubber, lenses, chrome side strips, grill and more are in overall good original condition. The top has been repaired in one spot, nicely done. Because the original paint is 46 years old, it will have its share of scratches, indentations, and other imperfections, many of which are smaller, and will not show up in the photographs.

Included is a matching set of brand new Mastercraft P175 70R14 radials. Just before putting the tires on the car, I had located what I believe to be a mint condition set of new old stock Rostyle wheels that I located in Escondido. I bought them from the son of a gentleman who had them for years and just kept them in storage. To the best of my knowledge, they had never been on the road prior to my putting them on this car.

THE INTERIOR dash has been nicely capped, and the passenger seat is in amazingly pristine original condition. The driver seat should be recovered to be up to the standards of its mate, and the center console cover needs securing. Could use carpeting. Otherwise, the interior looks, in my opinion, pretty much as it does in the photographs.

MECHANICS

The engine starts right up, runs cool and strong, does not smoke, has EXCELLENT OIL PRESSURE, and does everything these trustworthy little power plants have been doing so well for so many years. Believe me, somebody who knew what they were doing worked on this car. The compression is #1/162 #2/162 #3/162 #4/172. My mechanic has commented that it is common for the #4 cylinder to be slightly higher. He also said that this car is an excellent runner. Includes correct SU carburetors, air cleaners, and external oil cooler.

The brakes and emergency brake work well, the steering responsive, the suspension tight, the OVERDRIVE transmission shifts as smooth as glass and the car is a joy on the open road. During one trip to the store I noticed what sounds like a release bearing or pilot bearing that could be replaced. While one is at it, the flywheel should be resurfaced, and a new clutch installed to do the job right, a total estimated cost by my mechanic of $600.

WHAT WORKS? Among other things, All Smiths gauges, including gas, oil pressure, speedometer, tachometer, and heat gauges, choke, headlights, including high and low beams, tail lights, including brake lights and running lights, front running lights, turn signals, including tail light flashers, front running light flashers and dash flashers, passenger rear license plate light, dash emergency flasher switch and all related front and back exterior lights, dash flashers, interior courtesy light, windshield wipers, overdrive switch, interior fan switch, horn button, interior door openers, exterior door openers, driver interior door lock, driver and passenger exterior door locks, trunk lock, interior window winders, interior side vent flanges, and more. Even the cigarette lighter works!

The heating has not been tested. Currently the interior trunk light is missing, driver side license plate light, driver front side light, and passenger interior door lock are not working.

The above is based on my personal observation, and is not a professional inspection or warranty, nor is it an exhaustive analysis of what is correct, or not correct for this year automobile. You can expect that some things may not work up to your mechanics standards, and that he/she will most likely find additional work that hewould like to do.

They recognized the MG concept for what it was: an uncompromised dedication to performance and handling. The same dedication is true of MG today as realized in the new MGB.
