1959 MG MGA 1500 Roadster
This 1959 MG MGA 1500 is a two owner, exceptionally rust free example cared for by MG enthusiasts since new. Wearing black lacquer paint over a merlot red interior, this MGA is mechanically sound and sold in get-in-and-drive condition. Quite possibly the perfect rolling restoration candidate or simply a fun entry into the classic car hobby, this British roadster is as fun to drive as it is beautiful. With striking lines, a rev-happy 4 cylinder engine, classic color scheme and virtually zero rust, this MGA is a rare find indeed.
The interior of this MGA is in good condition. The original merlot red leather shows some sun fading in spots and there are single small holes located in the passenger and driver's side backrest and seat, respectively. All of the electrical components and gages are in pristine condition and in all in working order. The original wood floor boards are in exceptional condition and the carpeting is plush, stain free and dry. The black dashboard is in fantastic shape, showing no signs of warping or fading. The heater works well. Air conditioning is activated by rolling both windows down and setting a cruising speed of 45MPH.
Mechanically, this MGA is in great running condition. The entire top end of the engine has been resealed with OEM gaskets, including the head gasket, at which time the head was skimmed before being reinstalled. Valves were lashed, timing checked and a number of parts were replaced including the generator, water pump and drive belt. The 1500 revs well, sounds great and is very responsive. The 4 speed transmission glides smoothly into every gear with no grinding or drama. The clutch engages smoothly with a firm pedal. Braking is firm with no squealing or shudder.
The paint is in good condition. Wearing an older lacquer based paint there are visible signs of buffing burn through on the hood as well as some chipping and cracking near the trunk area. However, over most of the car the black paint is deep in color and shines well. Overall the vehicle presents well.
The overall structural condition is exceptional. Rarely is a vehicle of this vintage found in this level of original condition. The wooden passenger and driver's side floor boards are completely solid and dry. The entire vehicle is virtually rust free with zero structural issues. All exterior body panels, interior panels, door skins and trunk are completely solid and showing virtually no signs of even superficial surface rust. The frame shows no signs of accidents and wears minimal superficial surface rust only.
The brightwork, overall, is in great shape. Both front and rear bumpers and grill shine well and most trim pieces show only minor pitting at worst around the headlight trim and license plate light. The previous owner stated that he was backed into at a car show at low speed and the rear driver's side bumper left a scratch in the driver's side rear quarter panel.
Whether looking for an easy rolling restoration candidate or simply an affordable classic to enjoy, this MGA 1500 is an exceptionally well taken care of example that should provide years of enjoyment. A new battery and 4 brand new 165/80R15 tires were also just fitted and comes with the factory tonneau cover, soft top and side curtains. Given the increasing rarity of dry, well-maintained examples, this MGA provides an opportunity to own a striking British roadster at an affordable price.
