** 1961 MGA 1600 Roadster**
“A True British Classic Sports Car”
Recommended in Automobile Magazine as a car to “BUY” as prices have been creeping higher but have yet to really sky rocket, making this a great car to purchase today and an excellent investment for tomorrow. This coincides with a couple articles recently published by the Wall Street Journal on the topic of Investing in Classic Cars. It wasspecifically mentioned that it’s the Open Cars/Roadsters, that are performing the best in the Classic Car Market Place.
Hagerty Condition #2 Retail is $35,000 USD. This car is priced well below the book value.

British roadsters are in high demand, especially the MGA 1600 roadster, with its sweeping fenders, diminutive size, and wind-in-the-hair experience. The MGA replaced the MG TF 1500 in 1955 and represented a complete styling break from MG’s earlier sports cars. As it was so different from the older MG TD models it was called the MGA, the “first of a new line” to quote the contemporary advertising. There was also a new engine available, therefore the car did not have the originally intended XPAG unit but was instead fitted with the much more modern BMC corporate B-Series types allowing a lower bonnet line.
The MGA packs a lot of style in a small package. The two-seat open body was unmistakably a development of the earlier Philips racer design, being of the full width type, the wings blending into the bodywork to produce a beautiful and aerodynamic design that could arguably make them an affordable alternative to the Jaguar XK120. With the roadster specifically, aside from the obvious difference of not having a permanent hardtop, these models had no exterior door handles which only adds to the aerodynamics and sleekness of the design.
The chassis for the MGA was a development of the TD Midget's unit, but with more widely spaced side rails to allow for a lower seating position. This not only put the driver and passenger in a more sensible position in relation to the proportions and height of the body, but it had the added advantage of lowering the center of gravity, thus improving the cornering ability of the car. Combined with the delicate, chrome-framed windshield, these cars will give you a real out-in-the-elements experience, almost like riding a motorcycle.
The MGA has been raced extensively in the U.S. since its introduction in 1955 and with considerable success. In Sports Car Club of America competition the MGA has won numerous regional and national championships. It has also been a favorite choice of those competing in vintage racing.
Pop culture has also fallen in love the MGA resulting in many appearances over the years in famous movies including: Blue Hawaii (Elvis Presley), Animal House (John Belushi), Cool Runnings (Junior).
Prices for MGA’s have been moving upwards for the past several years following the lead of Jaguars and Austin Healey’s, however prices have yet to sky rocket now that premium priced bristish cars have climbed out of reach for most car enthusiasts leaving plenty of appreciation potential for buyers today.
