1957 NASH METROPOLITAN SPORT COUPE IN SHOWROOM CONDITION FULLY RESTORED
Description
After World War II, as car production started to get back to normal, the British auto makers started back building sports cars, many of which found themselves in the USA. Here in America, Nash Kelvinator Corporation was grinding out "plain vanilla" Nash and Rambler cars, as fast as they could build them, but they wanted to add something interesting into their showrooms, to increase sales traffic. (Nash eventually became American Motors Corp {including Jeep} which eventually got bought by Chrysler Corporation). So, around 1950, Nash hooked up with Austin in England, and with Italian designer, Pinin Farina, who drafted a new car which had the Nash "look" but was actually a British sports car underneath. They named it the Metropolitan and started selling them in 1951. Metros were a huge hit in post-war America. In 1955, they increased the size of the engine to 1500 CC's and did a minor styling update, and the car continued its popularity all the way to 1961.
The Metro, as they were lovingly called, sported an Austin A-40 4 cylinder overhead valve 1.5 liter engine with a Zenith downdraft carburetor and aluminum pistons. Pretty advanced for the time. Exotic two-tone colors were the hot ticket in the mid 50's, and the Metro's really looked adorable with their bright two color paint treatments!
This car was purchased from the original California owner in 1986, and was in outstanding condition, even before it was restored. Note, it still sports its super-rare ORIGINAL black and yellow, CA license plates! In 2006, it was treated to a thorough and complete bolt for bolt mechanical restoration, by Metropolitan Pit Stop in Hollywood. Then, it went to Fiberglass Unlimited in Fresno, CA, where it was cosmetically restored and preserved, right down to the tiniest detail.Literally every component was rebuilt, from window regulators to speedometer to powertrain and suspension. At a cost of over $25,000, the restoration was substantially more expensive than what the car is selling for, even now! Frankly, it was done out of love for the car, not financial gain, and it was worth every penny! Since its 2006 restoration, the car has been driven exactly 2,703 miles. In every way, this car remains a potential show winner. For many years, it has been faithfully maintained by British Steel Auto Restoration, an outstanding local British car specialist. They just inspected the entire car, correcting even the tiniest detail, to be sure it would be flawless for its new owner. It currently has no known problems, no oil leaks, and virtually no cosmetic flaws. The only non-stock item is the modern electric fuel pump, which replaced the unreliable SU fuel pump it was originally fitted with. It starts up every time. It drives as new. After 33 years under the same ownership, it is now being made available for its new owner-to-be, and for new adventures!
Below, you'll find a number of videos of both this car and a couple of interesting historical pieces on the Metro. EBay often makes URL addresses "un-clickable". If you have that problem, simply highlight one at a time, copy it, and paste it on to your web browser. It's worth it to help you get a true feel for this spectacular little sports car, which is now celebrating its 62nd birthday.
It is extremely unusual to find a car of this age that was never neglected, nor allowed to deteriorate, at any time in its life. It was kept maintained, and never used as a daily driver...always as a weekend sports car "toy". The minute you see it, you'll recognize that what you're looking at today, and what the first owner looked at, the day they bought it new, is pretty much identical. It is difficult to place a realistic value on such a car. If it were an Italian sports car in this condition, it could be in the millions. But it's just a Nash Metropolitan sports car, so we can't charge you what it should actually be worth.
It is our hope that its next owner will continue the tradition of preserving this amazing little sports car, for generations to come! Perhaps that might be you! Maybe, it's time for a little adventure in your life!! Please feel totally free to inquire in detail, or to request a phone call to go over every question you might have.No detail is too small to ask about, and few cars are more fun to talk about! Thanks, in advance, for your consideration!.
Here are the videos we promised. Remember, if clicking them fails, highlight them, copy them, and paste them on your browser, one at a time. Have Fun!
