1989 Pathfinder SE V6 4x4 2 Door

Here is an unmolested, pretty much all original 1989 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 with a few OEM upgrades & additions. It has been an Arizona vehicle since new (sold by ABC Nissan in Phoenix), has only been driven 151,000 miles and other than the paint is in darn good condition for a 30 year old truck! The last year of the 2-doors, it remains ready & willing to go exploring!

In it’s day this was one of the best equipped SUVs available and was a favorite of everyone from off-road enthusiasts to urban dwellers alike. With full body-on-frame construction it’s strong and solid to this day. Being a desert vehicle there is virtually no rust to speak of (save for a few bolt heads here & there on the undercarriage) and it’s been well maintained over the years so still starts, steers, runs, shifts and stops just as it should.

This was one of the first fuel injected trucks Nissan built and the 3.0L 6 cylinder with “Electro-Injection” turns over instantly in any weather. The 5 speed manual transmission shifts great, with a solid clutch, as does the transfer case, with 2H, 4H, N and 4L positions along with the front automatic hubs and factory Limited Slip Differential allowing you totake on everything from freeways (where it easily cruises 80+) to serious off-road terrain. Replaced the clutch master cylinder last year and a new-in-box slave cylinder is included (not needed but bought them both at same time).

The truck is equipped with air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, power door locks, front & rear interval wipers, rear window defroster, power rear glass release, a clutch/ignition interlock switch (which allows you to start the truck without pushing in the clutch, great for rock climbing, deep mud and sand in 4L where you need to maintain forward motion), sunroof, center console, temperature and voltage gauges, tachometer, dual trip odometers, digital clock, tilt steering wheel and a Kenwood Excelon aftermarket stereo with remote, bluetooth, Aux & USB inputs, SiriusXM & Pandora.

Everything works except the cruise control (I replaced the main switch & the cruise light now comes on but does not engage) and the rear glass release (the button works but does not unlock the glass). I just found a good used electrical/mechanical assembly for the glass release on Ebay so that’s included, you just need to install it. Just replaced the rear window and back hatch gas struts.

The guy I bought it from replaced the entire AC system with one from a newer Pathfinder, which uses R134A instead of the obsolete R12, and it blows ice-cold. He also put in a newer OEM radiator (with new belts) to go along with it so even on the hottest days with the AC full blast the temperature gauge never goes beyond the middle. From the same vehicle he installed a factory trailer hitch (but he didn’t wire in any sort of trailer harness). He never used it to tow nor have I but it’s there if you need it. Heat and defroster work great.

For off-roading the truck also has a front tow hook and factory installed full-length rock slider rails/side steps, both are solid. The factory roof rack with cross bars is in good condition. Tires are a matched set of 31 x 10.50R15 LT Hercules Terra Trac with 80% tread left all around (see pics) & the battery is a 3 year old Walmart Eveready. Truck has the optional rear door spare tire carrier, which really opens up the cargo space. Spare is OK but last time I looked it had some sidewall cracking so I’d replace that before any serious off-roading. Receipts for AC work, tires & battery are all in the glove compartment, along with the original Owners Manual & Warranty Info.

The interior is in decent shape, dash has cracks but has a carpeted dash mat, there are a few minor cracks in the door vinyl trim, drivers seat has some bolster wear and the carpet is threadbare near the shifter but there are no rips or tears anywhere and the seats are still supportive. The door panels are fine (other than the minor cracks) but need a few new panel clips to stop them from flapping.

Both front seats flip & slide forward to allow easy access to the cavernous back seat. The back seat folds flat & makes for a nice cargo/sleeping area - these trucks were known for their ability to take a 4x8 sheet of plywood between the wheel wells! It’s deceptively large inside.

Being 30 years old the door and window rubbers are pretty dried out but after much searching I found a new set of window seals & channels which are included still in their boxes. The sunroof works fine and has the removable factory interior cover still in place; the visors are OK but the passenger side doesn’t stay up by itself so it’s held there by string. Seat belts are intact, as are all mirrors & glass. Recently installed a set of smoked AVS window deflectors.

As you can see the major esthetic item is the paint & pinstriping, especially on the hood & roof. Not near as bad on the sides & rear door! There’s no “polishing out” the paint- either live with the patina (it certainly has no effect on running condition) or repaint it! The underhood insulation has a bare spot (looks like maybe a rodent got to it some years ago?).

Overall this is a great classic truck that’s ready to go - you can restore it, or just put a rooftop tent on the rack and go Overland adventuring! For not a lot of $$ you get a lot of truck that’ll keep up with your friends overpriced Jeeps all day!
