This Olds can be driven while being restored. This engine does have the original numbers matching Rocket 350 4-barrel.I double checked the engine block numbersand they do match the vehicle identification number. The Rocket 455 on the air cleaner is just a decal I had laying around, and looked better than the original Rocket 350 decal. The majority ofall the components on this engine are believed to be the original parts. Although the cruise control is an aftermarket addition.
This Convertible was purchased brand new at Snyder's Chevrolet/Oldsmobile Dealership in Napleton, Ohio back on October 1st, 1971 by a woman. The gentleman I purchased the car from said this was an original one owner car that had only one repaint over 30 years ago. The last time this convertible was licensed and roadworthy was in 1989 according to the Ohio license plate on the rear bumper.
The seller I purchased this car from told me that the prior owner tried to convince him that the mileage is correct at a mere 31,969 original miles. I looked at the brake pedal and by the looks of the wear on the original brake pedal pad I do believe there is a slight chance that the mileage could very well be the original. Obviously there is no way to verify the mileage as 100% correct. I believe there is a good chance that it rolled over considering the body condition.
The interior looks in very nice original condition, and even all four of the original factory Oldsmobile floor mats are still present, so that slight chance on the mileage being accurate could be believable. The original Oldsmobile floor mats are typically long gone on these cars.
The majority ofstates nowadays have mileage showing as exempt on the new title's issued on cars 10 years or older. The original 1972 Cutlass/442 owner's manual and the new car vehicle warranty pamphlet along with the original Protect-O-Plate are all included in the glove compartment. There is even a letter from the dealership, so that was a rare find on a 47-year old car. This sale is being made with a Wisconsin title that is open, clean, and clear issued in my name. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find with each passing year.
All the body side panels seem to be original to the car, but the paint is definitely faded. I did not see any signs of this convertible being involved in any type of accidents. The entire body will need to be restored and freshened up with a new coat of paint. I am selling this car where every part and every piece on this car will need to be repaired, replaced, or restored to bring this droptop back to its former glory.
This car has the vented style hood, but a nice addition would be the dual scooped ram-air hood that can be found at a wide variety of muscle car suppliers for around $600 dollars. A whale tail spoiler can be purchased for less than $250 dollars. The passenger door has seen better days, so I am including a nice replacement passenger door in this sale that will be placed inside the trunk for shipment. The corners of the replacement door and the seam all along the bottom of the door are all in very good condition. That door comes complete with glass, so it is basically ready to be mounted.
With each passing year it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find aMatador Red442 with a white interior and a white convertible top. Everyone who knows these cars knows this color and interior combination is one of the most difficult to find as well as one of the most popular and most desirable.
The options on thisOldsmobileinclude Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Convertible Top, 442 Sport Steering Wheel, Super Stock II wheels, Tinted Glass, and the original bench seat with the factory arm rest.
The convertible top seems to be the original and features theglass back window option, although it will need replacement. An exact replacement canvass top can be purchased for around $500 including the back glass window option. The top goes up and down very nicely through the switch on the dash. The original white California convertible top boot is also included inside the trunk. That can be placed over the convertible top whenthe topgoes down into the well liner behind the back seat.
Steering these carsis simply a delight with the 442 Sport steering wheel. These cars have finger tip control and drive down the road straight as an arrow. The silver trim around the dashboard is still in place. I didn't see any cracking anywhere on the dash and the dash pad still looks very good condition.
After I purchased this Olds I installed a brand new battery with new terminal ends. A brand new alternator and a brand new fuel pump were also just installed last week. This Rocket fires right up and runs great. There is nothing like cruising on a chilly day with the top down and the windows up with the heat blasting.
According to the OldsFaqs websiteonly 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whethera particularmodel is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly.I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S,and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealershipas a true442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model up until 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972.
The OldsFaqs website made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether a Cutlass Supreme Convertible was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door.
The front and the rear floor pans and the frame are all the originals on this car and crusty in several areas from sitting. There will be some work needed under the car to bring this rare convertible up to the next level. The black carpeting is believed to be original and still in rather good shape. I never had the car up on a lift, but I did jump on the floors with the top down and they seem to still be solid.
This Olds rides ona set of four 15" inch raised white lettered B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A belted tires with very good tread on Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body color. All four SS II wheels all have chrome lug nuts, all four center caps, and all four beauty trim rings.
This convertible has a 10-bolt rear-end,but I am unaware of the gear ratio. The original trunk floor will need some repair or replacement, but still has the original trunk floor mat in place with a full size spare tire. The originaljack, jack stand, bumper mount,and crow bar are all inside the trunk. This way if there is ever a mishap on the road with a quick tire it's always nice to have the option to be back on the road in minutes.
Thesound system is an old school Panasonic AM/FM Cassette player that still sounds really good. The dash panel was never cut to make the aftermarket stereo fit. The next owner may like to replace the current stereo with an original Oldsmobile AM radio or a factory AM/FM. An original Olds stereo will still fit in the correct factory position if the new owner desires.
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with the Rocket 350/180 horsepower V8 L-34 option listed at $62,810 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition listed at $41,910, which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out.They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
Nada hasthe lowest condition value at $26,510 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. I believe whatever this classic convertible sells for in this "No Reserve" auction is a win/win proposition.
