Description
1977 OLDSMOBILE Numbers Matching Crimson Red Genuine 442 4-speed with White 442 StripesThis is a rare opportunity that doesn't come around very often. 1977 was the last year of the full size 442 muscle car body that Oldsmobile produced. In 1978 Olds introduced the first year of the next generation in the Cutlass body style. My buddy bought a brand new 78 Cutlass in high school, but I didn't have the heart to tell him how disappointed I was with the new box body style. I simply told him what a beautiful car he purchased. That next generation complete makeover forced the box style on Cutlass lovers, and in my opinion degraded the 442 with a 4 cylinder engine in the following years. The 442 Glory Days had ended! This may be the final chance to find one of the last cool 442's ever made. If you are looking for that winter project then this real 442 4-Speed may have your name on it.
This is an extremely rare interior color with the matching exterior combination in Crimson Red with factory White 442 Stripes. Red on Red!! You would be hard pressed to even view another one in person. I know since I've been a 442 lover my entire life and I have never seen another one in this color combo. Heck! You really don't even see many 1973-1977 442 models barely left in existence nowadays. These 442's are bound to escalate in value like the earlier 442 models that have been skyrocketing. This 1977 Oldsmobile 442 has the original engine and a factory Hurst 4-speed. I'm sure most later generation 442 enthusiastswill tend to agree that you rarely see an authentic Crimson Red Genuine 442 in original condition with a 4-speed.
If you simply double click on the main picture of this auction page then all 24 pictures will open up and be able to be viewed in the larger size by clicking the arrows on each side of the larger pictures. This is the first time this 442 has ever been offered to the public on eBay.
I will explain everything I know about this real 442, so the lucky bidder who wins thisrare gemcan decide exactly what they would like to spendprior to placing their bid. This auction is just in time to buy that rare 442 that you have been needing for parts, or if you wanted to have a cool old classic to restore over the fall and winter. I believe this 442 is really worth making into a nice car again.
The original owner of this Crimson Red former beautiful 442 was the Fire Chief of Union Grove, Wisconsin. The Chief purchased this car brand new at Frank Gentile Oldsmobile in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. That sure must have been one glorious day. The gentleman that I purchased this car from was the second owner who bought it from the Chief. He had it last registered in 1990 when it was parked in his garage until the day I made the purchase this past summer. Apparently he was losing his home to foreclosure the next day, so the car had to be moved that night or it would have been lost to the bank. After I viewed the 442 I worked real hard to get the car unburied and get a trailer to winch it out of the spot it had sat for almost 3 decades.
The prior owner did have the title registered to himself and the plates were in his name. He misplaced the title over the years and he recently met me at the DMV to get a duplicate replacement, but they had no record of file. The DMV asked me to call the state capitol in Madison. They said they do not have any record on file and wanted me to go through a long process that would take over six months. I don't have time to go through the long State of Wisconsin title process, so this car does not come with a title. I assure the new owner that this 442 that it is free and clear of any liens. The winning bidder will receive a Bill of Sale in their name. I know titles can be obtained through different sources in each various state around the country. I do know dealers have it easier to obtain a clear title than the average guy, but each state is different. Obtaining a title will be left up to the winning bidder. I do believe a clear title can be obtained rather easily through the Broadway Title Co. in Bangor, ME. That can all be done online with a little research. This Oldsmobile would also be great for a parts car, but I'll leave that decision up to the next owner, whether they would like to bring it back to its former glory or use it for parts.
When restoring a numbers matching car it is always best to have as many of the original parts as possible to do a correct restoration. I saw mostly all of the original parts under the hood, and even the original clamps and hoses. The original mileage I was told is absolutely correct at a mere 88,353. This engine had not been started in over 27 years until I made the purchase this past summer. I was just out there today on Thanksgiving and put a brand new battery in the car and it started right up, but will need to be trailered. This 442 even has brakes, so it should be no problem to load onto a car carrier. Some of the options include power steering, power front disc brakes, rear defroster, bucket seats, AM/FM Stereo, Super Stock II wheels, sport mirrors, and best of all a 4-speed.
This 442 has its original Crimson Red paint on the body with the white 442 stripes. I simply touched up several areas as a rust preventative. The doors are the original doors with the original door edge guards, and the doors still open and close when this car was new. The rear quarter panels are also original to this body as I have seen no signs of any body work or replacement. I've had many Cutlass and 442's over the years, but I have never had a 77 until this one. This is a rare find!
Most every part for these cars are made in very nice aftermarket identical reproduction parts that are available at a wide variety of muscle car supply stores that specialize in the 442 models.
The chrome seems to all be still present, but everyone who has had one of these cars or knows about them will know how bad the rear bumpers deteriorate. This one is no different. It will need a new rear bumper. The front bumper will need to be re-chromed. The front and the rear floor pans are the originals and have never been replaced. The frame appears to be in nice condition from everywhere I looked. Most likely because this 442 had been garaged for the majority of its life. This is an original bucket seat 4-speed car. The drivers bucket seat will need to be reupholstered, but the passenger bucket seat still looks very nice with no splits in the seams. The back seat looks in very nice condition as well. The headliner is still really nice with only one minor blemish. The interior door panels and the rear back panels look really nice too. The original AM/FM stero radio is still in the dash and even works well. This dash was never cut up like was typically done back in the day to fit aftermarket stereos.
This442 sits on a set of four raised white lettered tires withgood tread mounted on 15" inch Super Stock II wheels like this 442 came from the factory in 1977. All four wheels have all four center caps and all fourbeauty trim rings. The original trunk floor is in very nice condition and still hasthe originaltrunk mat with the original jack, jack stand, and crow bar that looks like it has never been used. Also included in the trunk is the full size Super Stock II spare wheel with what looks like the original Goodyear Polysteel radial tire like the original tires that were ordered on these cars when they were new.
These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find.
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently hasa genuine1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass with the 442 package and the original engine listed at $24,220 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition value at $13,369 which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
They have the lowest condition value at $5,249 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. I'm sure if these numbers reflected a 4-speed the numbers would be much higher prices.
The Nada numbers don't lie! This Classic Iconic 442 Muscle Car is a very valuable automobile if given the proper restoration!
Whatever this classicgenuine 442sells for in this quick "No Reserve" 3-day auction is a win/win investment. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as thesetrue 442'shaveconsistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter.
I've onlyowned this car since the middle of summer. I have an overwhelming amount of projects right now, and I lost the shop that I've rented for the past three years at the end of September. Therefore I've decided to part with some of the muscle cars that I do not have the time or the space to restore properly. The lucky winning bidder can be the one to bring this classic back to its former glory. This genuine 1977 442 is extremely rare and hard to find. This 40 year old classic is like a barn find type of sale except it was found in a garage that has been sittingfor the last 27 years without any use whatsoever.
