1970 Opel GT Coupe 2-Door 1.9L, runs, no reserve
Description
I bought this Opel GT in 1990 and it's been in dry storage since. I've never had time to restore it and have decided to sell it.
I was told it was a Texas car. There's very little Bondo in the body. There's some rust-through at the bottom of the rockers and a couple small holes in the floor. See the pictures. On the whole, it's very solid as these were very rust-prone. I've restored much worse.
The 1.9 liter engine starts easily, idles down and run decently. It's a bit loud as the exhaust is a patch-work mess. Still has a Solex carb. The transmission works in all gears but the #2 & #3 synchros are weak. Good clutch. The headlights flip over easily. The alternator charges, the gauges all work except for the fuel gauge. Wipers, horn and blower motor work.
The tires hold air but are not road-worthy. The handbrake will stop the car. The hydraulic brakes have been unused for decades. I suspect the calipers will lock if the brake pedal is depressed, so I have not and will not pump the brakes. The car could be driven onto a trailer with a little care, but otherwise is not safe for the road until the brakes are rebuilt.
The pictures tell everything about the body. Poor paint and a number of dings and dents. Damaged driver's door may be able to be straightened by a pro. The hood hinge is gone and someone installed a couple hood pins at the front edge. The interior needs the usual rehabilitation after 46 years. No chipped or cracked glass.
Basically a solid starting point for a full restoration. Opel-GT-Source in California is a great source for all the parts this car could ever need. I hope it goes to a good home.
