Description

This 1972 Opel GT is well-preserved and a well-presented reminder of one of the coolest German imports of the era. It's a sleek machine that's fun to drive and is almost always the only one to show up at the cruise-in. So it's impressive you can get this much distinction for such an affordable price. These GTs came on the scene at about the same time as the C3 Corvette, and since the German Opels were sold through... Buick dealers, there was an inevitable comparison across the GM line. But really, the Opel offered a lot more. This is a true European with a body built in France and completed in Germany. You can see this European style in the slope of the roofline, and the smooth rounded sides. This example really shows all of this well with a preserved style with good body panels, correct chrome bumpers, and all the right details - including the color-matched 15-hole steelie wheels. Plus, everyone loves the look of the headlights as they reveal by folding over to the side, like perfectly-timed German synchronized swimmers. And there's rarity in this beauty. With only about 12k GTs sold that year, this is more of a boutique import (Chevrolet sold more than double the number of Corvettes in '72.) Inside is well-preserved interior. The high back bucket seats provide true vintage charm, right down to the fabric inserts. And here's where the GT should be compared to a Corvette, because of how much this is a driver's machine. There's a full center console driver-dominated dash, and a three-spoke sports steering wheel that offers a clear view to the large VDO speedo and tach. Under the hood is the correct 1.9-liter motor. This was the larger of the two available from Opel during the GT's run. And it even has been well cared for, including an upgrade to a Weber carb and an aluminum radiator. Those who know European cars (MGs, Volkswagens, etc.) understand that low displacement can also mean a lot of fun. These were built for broader rev-ranges, and so you can take full control with the four-speed manual transmission. And it creates a feeling where the driver is an essential part of the performance. For many of us that's the true enthusiast's experience. Plus, they knew how to build lively cars with telepathic steering, tight handling, and front disc brakes. Preserved, distinctive, and absolutely affordable, this Opel GT makes for a great all-around classic. Call today!!!
