1923 Stutz Speedway Four 6 Passenger Touring - AMAZING ORIGINAL. Listed on behalf of the owner. Located near EUGENE, OREGON Stutz built some of the most mechanically advanced cars of the classic era. Advertised as "The Car That Made Good in a Day" referring to their first showing at the 1911 Indianapolis 500; Stutz was an incredibly powerful, fast and sleek car on the track or on the road. This 1923 "Speedway Four" is remarkable on many levels. The 4-cylinder, 365 cubic inch T-Head engine incorporates twin ignition (two distributors and two spark plugs per cylinder with 16 valves) producing a whopping 88 horsepower. Consider that a Ford Model T of the day produced 20 horsepower, and it took Duesenberg 8 cylinders in their Model A to match the Stutz 4's output. Even the the vaunted Packard "Twin Six" 12-cylinder engine produced only 2 more horsepower than the 88 horsepower Stutz 4. The Stutz was truly a race car for the road. While the early history of this car is unknown, sometime in the 1950's it was acquired by the legendary and eccentric Stutz collector, A.K. Miller in Vermont. Miller found the Stutz in original condition in Tennessee. Miller transported the car to his farm where it was entombed in a shed, along with his other Stutz hoard. There it remained unseen for over 40 years. Following Miller's passing, in 1996 his collection was sold to satisfy back taxes. The car was purchased by a collector in Florida where it remained untouched and in 2009 it was sold to the Blackhawk Museum. Several years ago it was acquired, still in original condition, by the current owner in Oregon. What you see here is a remarkably original, 94 year-old Stutz. The paint, upholstery and trim are still untouched. Since its discovery in the Miller barn, a sympathetic refreshing of mechanical components has been made over the past 20 years to make the car roadworthy again. This included: cleaning and relining the fuel tank, rebuilding the fuel delivery system (vacuum tank and carburetor), rebuilt starter, generator, distributors and ignition system, reset the valves, rebuilt brakes, new Dunlop tires. All lights and gauges work. Note that the restored mechanical components were not painted or cosmetically refreshed - instead being left with original finishes, like the rest of the car. Please see photos. Today, this Stutz runs and drives wonderfully as you would expect a 46,000 mile car to do. While we have not pushed it, it is certainly capable of 80+ MPH speeds (or more, if you dare - considering the two-rear-wheel-only, mechanical brakes!) It is smooth running and has a throaty exhaust note at speed. Please see video of this car running and driving. The body is straight and undamaged, with a patina and originality that cannot be duplicated, except through 94 years of life. The upholstery is fair and top worn, and while they could be replaced, we are of the opinion "they are only original once!" With preservation cars receiving so such attention lately by collectors and at concours shows including Pebble Beach, we feel it would be a shame to alter anything cosmetically on this car, but simply enjoy and appreciate it as it stands. Of course, if one were to decide to restore it, you will have a rare, complete running car with which to start the project. This is truly a rare opportunity to acquire a landmark classic era automobile unlike any other. This car is recognized as a Full Classic® by the Classic Car Club of America and is eligible for particpation in all of their shows, events and tours.
