Description

1954 HUDSON HORNET SEDAN

HISTORY

The Hudson Motor Car Company was known for producing durable, well engineered but conservatively styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th, 1947 when Hudson introduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It’s Hudson”. The cars won instant acclaim from the public. Production had actually begun on October 12th. The tremendous factory conversion effort took only 23 days. Hudson spent $16,000,000 for development and new production equipment. The new car was revolutionary in that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models, except the eight cylinder engine, which was essentially the same. The car had the lowest center of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American car without sacrificing headroom, due to the floorpans being attached to the bottom of the frame members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been. The 1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody car, the new Hudsonwas significantlymore rugged in construction and offered a sleek new design that was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed “Monobilt” because the body structure was of welded all steel construction.

The Legendary Hudson Hornet was introduced for the 1951 model year. They immediately started burning up the racetracks and byways of America. The last year of Detroit Hudson production was 1954. By 1954 the single carburetor Hornets were rated at 160 Horsepower due to better valve relief and a more aggressive camshaft. Twin H Power cars were rated at 170.

The 1954 Hornet Sedan featured in this auction was a very early production car that sold new in Southwestern Virginia and lived its life as a car there in the Smoky Mountains. It was barn stored from 1977 until spring of 2012. The mileage was 92,378 when removed from storage. I sold this car to a good friend in the Hudson Club in Southern Virginia. He has put over 7,000 miles on it since then! The current mileage is 99,256. I believe this to be the actual mileage. It is equipped with seat covers, directional signals, reverse lamps, a Heater, and standard shift with Overdrive and a 4.10 Dana rear axle. It is equipped with the Hotter “Flattop” camshaft that has a distinctive solid lifter sound unique to 54 Hornets.

CONDITION

This car is a very nicely preserved functional car that will drive to any destination. You could start driving this car everyday. The car was originally painted Roman Bronze with a Black top. It was repainted many years ago in Lipstick red with a Corination Cream top. There are various scrapes and dents as depicted in the photos. The chrome is all Shiny, but all have some small imperfections. The interior has the original accessory seatcovers, New carpets, kickpanels and deckshelf. It features a beautifully restored Ivory steering wheel! There is a Niceset of 5bias ply Collector car tires on freshly powder coated wheels. The glass is original and nice. It is mostly Rust free, although there is some damage in the heel of the drivers side front fender, the passenger front door, over the passenger side skirt and a very small hole in the drivers side rocker panel. The underbody structure has no rust. The right side “washboard” stainless trim is damaged. A NOS replacement piece is included. The car runs and drives perfectly. All of the lights and Gauges work. The vacuumwipers work great and have new blades. The Clock is inop. When removed from storage in 2012, I cleaned the oilpan, put in a new rear main seal, an oilpump drive gear and serviced the clutch. A restoration grade brake job was done to include POR-15 paint on backing plates and drums, all new cylinders, rubber hoses, wheel seals and a conversion to DOT5 Silicone Brake Fluid. The suspension is tight as well as the exhaust. The Gastank and fuel gauge sender are freshly done as well. There is new 6 volt Electric fuel pump mounted back by the fuel tank.I noticed a small external crack in the cylinder head near the thermostat housing. It now sports a new reconditioned cylinder head, new head gasket, head bolts and spark plugs.

This is a matching number, Great Running Hornet with Overdrive. It really runs Strong! It is currently Licensed, Insured and on the road. It runs, shifts, drives, handles and stops perfectly! I recently went to Virginia and drove this car on a 200 plus mile tour. We then drove it straight through from near Winchester, Virginia to Indianapolis at 70 Miles an Hour, most of it in a rainstorm, with no problems! This isn’t a ride on a trailer kind of car. It is the one passing you at 70 Miles an Hour!
