1985 BERTONE X1/9 VS-S CORSA FLAMINIA PROTOTIPO FULLY RESTORED MAINTAINED CAR MEANING EVERYTHING HAS EITHER BEEN REPLACED WITH NEW AND N.O.S. PARTS, REBUILT ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH, SLAVE AND MASTER CYLINDERS (all fluids) ETC. An N.O.S. crack free dash, rubber door weatherstrip moldings, gas tank, vanity gas cap, clutch, trim rings, Corsa fog lights found in Greece etc.) REFURBISHED, REFINISHED OR REBUILT. Off the assembly line was partially disassembled and painted by the late Bertolucce Gambondini for Guiseppe Bertone at the request of his friend my former Fiat/Bertone dealership boss D. Marello in the carrozzeria complex. THIS X1/9 HAS NEVER HAD ANY RUST, HAS ALL ITS ORIGINAL BODY PANELS, AS IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN A COLLISION AND HAS BEEN A WEST COAST DESERT/BASIN CAR MOST OF ITS LIFE AS WELL AS RECEIVED UNDERCOATING AT THE FACTORY PRIOR TO SHIPPING/BEING LOADED FOR TRANSPORT.IF I WERE TO HAVE CHARGED (been paid) FOR MY WORK ON THIS X1/9 OVER THE YEARS, AND WERE TO ADD UP WHAT I AND OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH THIS RESTORATION WOULD HAVE CHARGED (standard pro industry wages) TODAY IT WOULD BE WELL OVER 30K, BUT THIS WAS MY PERSONAL CAR NEVER INTENDED TO BE TRADED OFF SO I DID NOT CARE WHAT I SPENT ON IT AS LONG AS IT WAS RESTORED TO AS IT WAS ORIGINALLY DISPLAYED BEFORE BEING DELIVERED TO THE U.S.. THE REASON FOR SELLING IS I JUST NEED THE SPACE FOR OTHER PROJECTS AND DID NOT EXPECT TO LIVE THIS LONG BEING HEALTHY ENOUGH TO CONTINUE WITH RESTORATIONS.THESE ARE GREAT DRIVING TOURING CARS AND LATER VERSIONS STOCK WILL CRUISE AT 80 MPH. BE WEARY OF "LOW MILEAGE BARN FIND X1/9'S AND CARS LIKE THESE THAT HAVE BEEN IDLE FOR LONG PERIODS. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GAS AND OIL, AUTOMOTIVE FLUIDS ARE DESIGNED TO BE AND MUST BE HYDROPHILIC/think hydraulic systems/brakes and clutch and corrosion). TYPICAL METHANOL BLENDED PUMP FUEL/PETROL GAS HAS ITS OWN PROBLEMS WHEN IT GETS TO BE ABOUT SIX MONTHS OLD AND AS TIME GOES BY ONLY GETS WORSE AND CAN DAMAGE FUEL SYSTEMS AND MAKES FOR BIG EXPENSIVE PROBLEMS WITH ALL CARS IF NOT STABILIZED INITIALLY. WITH THESE FUEL INJECTED VERSIONS EXPECT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 30 TO 37mpg FOR REAL. WHILE IN MANY RESPECTS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME CAR (as the later 5spd fiat x1/9) IN 1983 AND AFTER X 1/9'S HAD ELECTRICAL UPGRADES (bertones used 100% copper wires no alloys) SUCH AS ATC FUSES, DIFFERENT BADGING, BETTER INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY materials (AVAILABLE LEATHER SEATING TRIM AND DOOR PANELS as this car has, IMPROVED SMOOTHER SEAT TRACK SYSTEM, BOTH VERSIONS (earlier and later) SHARED INTERIOR (stale) AIR EXTRACTORS (better ventilation) WITH THE TOP ON, MORE PLUSH INTERIOR CARPET MATERIAL, UPHOLSTERED AND INSULATED HEADLINER MATERIAL FOR THE ROOF SECTION (VS [A/C] cars had insulated white headliners and the others were black material) MORE RELIABLE AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEMS (Japanese compressors), MORE AMENITIES, REAR DEFROSTERS, LOW FUEL LIGHTS, SMART RELAYS FOR THE INTERIOR ENTRY/COURTESY LIGHTS, EMERGENCY ENGINE AND REAR TRUNK CABLES IN ADDITION TO THE STANDARD LOCKABLE CABLE CONTROLS IN THE DOOR JAM (which are working fine), ENGINEERED DOOR LOCKS (so as you cannot be locked out of these cars because outside the car you have to use a key to lock it, and the door must be shut to depress the lock ferules from inside of the car/when the door is opened the ferule comes up), BETTER SERVICE ACCESS (removable panels) WHICH CUTS DOWN ON MAINTENANCE TIMES, STAINLESS EXHAUST, MORE POWER WITH THE 1.5L RELIABLE BOSCH FI ENGINE AND THE 5 SPD TRANSMISSIONS.
"S" PACKAGE:IN AN EFFORT TO BOLSTER SALES OF THE X1/9 MODEL THIS PACKAGE WAS AVAILABLE AND PROMOTED BY HEAD OF IAI MALCOLM BRICKLIN AND IT CONSISTED OF SPECIAL STRUTS LOWERING THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 20 mm. EXTRA-COST. IF PURCHASED WITH THE CORSA PACKAGE DUAL EXHAUST AND CUTOUTS (to give the car the group B/group-5 LOOK). INTENDED DISTINCTIVE BADGING Some of the export cars (including s cars received the 3:4:1 FINAL DRIVE RATIO DEPENDING UPON WHERE THEY WERE SENT.CORSA PACKAGE: REGARDLESS AS TO WHO ACTUALLY MANUFACTURED THIS PARTICULAR CORSA SETWE HAVE MARCELLO GANDINI TO THANK FOR THE FANTUZZI/BIZZARINNI/TESTAROSSA INSPIRED DESIGNS OF THIS PARTICULAR PACKAGE/ CAR AND THE CORSA CONCEPT AS WELL AS THE PAINT SCHEME DELINEATIONS (just not the particular colors which are black with red pearl and greccio/red with sprayable paint with formulas for any re-spraying needs). THE FOIL ON THE DECK LID OF THIS CAR WAS ONE OF THE MOST COPIED ASPECTS OF THIS CAR ASIDE FROM THE CAR ITSELF, (imitation being the sincerest form of flattery). TO BE CLEAR,CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF THESE CORSA PARTS DID NOT COME FROM A JC WHITNEY CATALOG BACK IN THE DAY. ASIDE FROM BEING PENNED BY MARCELLO THEY WERE AUTHORIZED AND MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE X1/9 AND INSTALLED ON THIS CAR IN CARROZERRIA BY SPECIAL PERMISSION/ORDER FOR A VIP IN ORDER TO PROMOTE WHAT AN X1/9 COULD BE ORDERED WITH AS WELL AS WHAT COULD BE INTEGRATED WITH/ THROUGH THE BERTONE DEALER NETWORKS.THIS PACKAGE WAS MOST COMMONLY AVAILABLE OVER THE COUNTER TO ANYONE WITH $1400.00 (in 1985 dollars) FROM VARIOUS MAKERS, HOWEVER, IT WAS UP TO THE CUSTOMER TO HAVE IT INSTALLED AND PAINTED. THE CORSA'S PACKAGES SHOWN ON THIS MARKETING PROTOTYPE WERE INSTALLED IN CARROZERRIA, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NOT A DESIGNATED PLACE TO DO THIS ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE THEY UTILIZED A SMALL SHOP IN CARROZZERIA WHERE PRIMARILY BODY AND PAINTING REPAIR WORK WERE PERFORMED AS WELL WORK ON THE VARIOUS MODEL MARKETING AND OTHER OVERFLOW REPAIRS/ PROJECTS.FOR THE X1/9 THE CONSENSUS WAS TO PROMOTE THESE EXTRA-COST FEATURES IN AN EFFORT TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S PERCEPTIONS OF BERTONE X1/9'S FROM THE FORMER FIAT'S X1/9'S. ONE OBSTACLE WITH THIS WAS THE COST, THESE CARS WERE GETTING EXPENSIVE (with no engine displacement/induction upgrades) WAS WHICH WAS ONE REASON THERE WERE FEWER OF THE LATER CARS MADE AS MANY PEOPLE'S PERCEPTION HAD NOT YET CHANGED fast enough. THERE WERE VERY FEW X1/9'S THAT RECEIVED THIS MUCH ATTENTION . WITH DIFFERENT YEARS VARIED CORSA PACKAGES BY DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS WERE AVAILABLE, THIS WAS THE MOST AESTHETIC, FLOWING EXOTIC ONE FOR THE STREET CARS, AND IF YOU WANTED BERTONE TO INSTALL THEM THEY WERE AT A SUBSTANTIAL EXTRA- COST WHICH IS WHY FEW CUSTOMERS BOTHERED, WHICH IS ALSO ANOTHER REASON THIS CAR IS SO UNUSUAL AND STILL HERE IN TACT TODAY. A BRITISH WATCHER OUT THERE HAD MADE A REFERENCE TO THIS VEHICLE AS A "CHITSY" RESTORATION, WHILE I AM NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT THIS EXPRESSION MEANS BUT MANY OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH IT'S CREATION WOULD TAKE UMBRAGE WITH THIS ASSERTION BECAUSE COLORFUL AND FLAMBOYANT WAS THE POINT, THEY WANTED A CAR THAT WOULD STAND OUT WITH ALL OF THE OPTIONS THAT WERE BEING PROMOTED AS WELL AS WITH THIS X1/9 ITSELF, AND A FEW OPTIONS THAT WERE ONLY OFFERED LATER. THE SHOWINESS WAS THE IDEAL (less the wheels/this car came with the CD-179 tron wheels that are included) AS AT THIS TIME BERTONE DID NOT OFFER A 7" WIDE WHEEL FOR STREET CARS UNTIL THEY COMMISSIONED THE ONE YOU SEE ON THIS CAR, GOOD IDEA, BAD IDEA, IT WAS NOT MY IDEA, RATHER IAI MALCOLM BRICKLIN OR WHOMEVER HE DESIGNATED. IAI/MALCOLM BRICKLIN AND THE ORDERING DEALER I WORKED FOR WANTED A CAR THAT PEOPLE WOULD NOTICE AND TALK ABOUT! AS FAR AS THE INTERIOR IT WOULD BE EASY FOR ME OR ANYONE ELSE TO PROCURE SOME WHITE OR BLACK N.O.S. LEATHER UPHOLSTERY, BUT WITH THOSE THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER BE AS IT WAS CREATED. THOUGHT I WOULD HELP THE REFERRED TO BRIT GENTLEMAN OUT, IF A 1989 RH DRIVE WHITE X1/9 GRAN FINALE WITH PLAID CLOTH SEATS AND NO AIR CONDITIONING FOR 30K DOES IT FOR YOU, THERE'S ONE OUT THERE FOR SALE IN THE U.K. LAST TIME I LOOKED. WITH THIS EXTREMELY RARE VERSION OF THE X1/9 (and some other x1/9 cars manufactured with multi-color interiors) CURRENTLY ALONG SIDE SOME OF THE MOST EXOTIC AND EXPENSIVE SPORTS CARS IN THE WORLD THERE HAS BEEN FOR SOME TIME A SECULAR TREND WITH MONOCHROMATIC INTERIORS HAVING BEEN ON THE OUT, AND BRIGHT AND BOLD JUXTAPOSITIONS OF COLORS OF MOST ANY DESCRIPTION THE SECULAR TREND. HERE YOU HAVE A CAR THAT WAS WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME WITH THIS TREND AND AS FAR AS COLOR AND STYLE STILL REMAINS AVANT-GARDE TODAY, WHETHER MALE OR FEMALE, LIKE IT OR NAY. IT IS AN ATTENTION GETTING EXOTIC CAR, A VEHICLE THAT GARNERS ATTENTION WHEREVER IT GOES (which is one reason people buy them) JUST LIKE THOSE MILLION DOLLARS EXOTIC CARS THAT WHILE ON MANY LEVELS ARE OUT OF THIS CARS LEAGUE, IT IS FAR MORE PRACTICAL (for an exotic mid engine car) BUT YOU ALSO DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A MILLION DOLLARS TO BE A PLAYER, WHICH WOULD BE THE ARGUMENT FOR ITS INCEPTION. PERSONALLY IT IS ALL ABOUT HOW A CARS MAKES YOU FEEL WHEN YOU DRIVE IT, OR LOOK AT IT THAT MATTERS NOT WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS.
WHILE THERE ARE SOME FINE X1/9 GRAN FINALE CARS IN THE U.K., THEY ARE NO WAY NEAR AS RARE AS THIS PARTICULAR CAR (loaded corsa car with all the rare options) BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT WAS ORDERED, WHO ORDERED IT, WHY IT WAS ORDERED AND WHERE IT WAS HEADED ETC. DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DRIVE AROUND TOWN IN NICE WEATHER IN YOUR X1/9 ON A HOT DAY WITH A PANARAMIC ROOF WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING, SERIOUSLY? EVEN IF YOU COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BERTONE HISTORICITY, THEN YOU STILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO OWN SOLID RUST FREE MECHANICALLY SOUND BERTONE X1/9 EXAMPLE UNIQUE ENOUGH THAT ANOTHER JUST LIKE IT WILL NEVER PULL UP BESIDE YOU. THIS VEHICLE ACCORDING TO THE CALIFORNIA BUREAU OF REVENUE SOLD NEW FOR $24,000 IN 1986, WHICH IS ALMOST DOUBLE THE PRICE OF A NORMAL VS EQUIPPED X1/9.

THEY REFINED THESE CARS AS MUCH AS THEY COULD (for the money involved and without a drivetrain upgrade), FROM 1983 THRU 1988 BUT FAILED TO GET THE CUSTOMERS BACK INTO THE DEALERSHIPS FOR MAINTENANCE, AND FAILED TO COMPENSATE THE DEALERS TO COMPENSATE PEOPLE LIKE ME TO DO WARRANTY WORK WHICH IS ONE REASON I QUIT (and went to volvo, then kawasaki). THEY EVENTUALLY PULLED OUT OF THE US MARKET AND TECHNICALLY THERE WERE NO 1989 X1/9's FOR THE U.S.. THE LATER CARS WERE THE MOST WELL DESIGNED, SAFE AND THE MOST ACCESSIBLE VERSIONS TO MAINTAIN AND MOST RELIABLE VERSIONS OF THIS AUTOMOBILE, BUT REQUIRED SIMPLE MAINTENANCE (not unlike any other) AND SORTING OBVIOUSLY, AND NOT EVERYONE OR EVERY SERVICE FACILITY OUT THERE WAS QUALIFIED OR WILLING. ALL THE CENTER CAPS AND N.O.S TRIM RINGS ARE THERE AND INCLUDED. I ALSO ASSUMED THEY INSTALLED A NEW TIMING BELT, THEY HAD WITH THE BELT BUT ASSUMPTION IS INDEED OFTEN THE MOTHER OF ALL DISAPPOINTMENT, SO ONCE I TOOK IT ALL APART I REPLACED EVERYTHING, THAT'S HOW I ROLL. I CHECKED AND SHIMMED THE VALVES JUST THE OTHER DAY FOR GOOD MEASURE. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT I POSTED A PICTURE OF THE PROCESS AND YOU CAN SEE THE TIMING BELT ETC. THESE CARS OR MANY OTHER CARS CAN LOSE 10% OR MORE OF THEIR PEAK HORSEPOWER DUE TO THE VALVES SETTLING/WEARING IN THE SEATS, DIMINISHING ANY CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE VALVE SHIM AND THE CAM WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM. IF THE VALVES DO NOT FULLY CLOSE THERE WILL BE A REDUCTION IN PEAK POWER AND TORQUE. THESE CARS NEED ALL THEIR POWER TO GIVE THE BEST DRIVING EXPERIENCE!
ALL MAINTENANCE WORK OVER THE 15 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE WAS PERFORMED BY THIS FACTORY TRAINED 35 YEAR VETERAN TECHNICIAN AND LIFE LONG AFICIONADO OF THE MAKE. TOWARDS THEN END OF ITS FIRST LIFE THIS CAR FAILED CALIFORNIA SMOG TWICE WHICH IS WHY THE ENGINE (long block and cylinder head/distributor etc.) HAD TO BE REBUILT OR EXCHANGED IN ORDER FOR THE OWNER TO BE ABLE TO LEGALLY RESELL A SMOGABLE CAR IN CALIFORNIA. REBUILT BY AL COSENTINO ORGANIZATION AROUND 1999 AND THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 5000 MILES SINCE. TRANSMISSION GONE THRU STOCK U.S. SPEC RING AND PINION SET INSTALLED, REVERSE SLIDER REPLACED, CRITICAL OUTPUT SHAFT SEALS AND RUBBER BOOTS REPLACED SO IT IS NOT MUCH OF A LEAKER.
