1932 Riley
Riley started business as a bicycle manufacturer in 1896. In the early 1900's one of the sons of the founder designed an engine with an inlet valve that was technically advanced and practical. This was against his fathers approval, who did notview internal combustion and automobiles favorably. As an indicator of the value of Percy Rileys design, Mercedes Benz could not collect royalties for their Valve design in the UK due to patents approved to Riley. The slogan for Riley was to become: "Riley-as old as the industry,as modern as the hour." Moving ahead to the 1920's the Riley 9 was (to quote wikipedia) "called the most significant engine development of the 1920's". Its specifications includedHemispherical combustion chambers, 1087 cc displacement, crossflow head with two cams in the engine block and twin carburetors. This package made for excellent performance and potential tuning for improved performance. Subsequent tuning and competition produced a reliable 50bhp @ 5000 rpm. This design became very successful in competition for the factory and privateer alike. Selling now is this Riley "Brooklands 2 seater sports car. The Chassis number is 6015601 and the engine40024. It is an older restoration that is in operable condition. It was imported into the USA about 20 years ago from Australia and still retains it number plates from there. It has a clear US title in hand. It will need new tires for extended use. I must say that the driving position is avery cramped for someone my size (fat). The engine fires right up and idles smoothly. Clutch engages smoothly, shifts and stops well. I will consider similar quality trades of classic motorcycles and cars. Please call Michael Kiernan at (314)772-5758
