The car is in pretty good condition.
The base engine in the American is a 195.6-cu.ininline six-cylinder, AKA the Super Flying Scot. It was a flathead (or L-head) design that traced its roots back to a pre-war Nash engine, but in the American, it used a 3.13-inch bore, a 4.25-inch stroke and an 8:1 compression ratio tomake 90hp and 150-lbs.ft. of torque. A single-barrel Carter YF carburetor fed bya vacuum booster type fuel pump helped keep the fuel consumption down to astingy trickle. There is nothing remarkably good or bad about these engines.They tend to be reliable and simple to work on, and parts are still availablefrom a variety of sources.
The interior was spartan, with asimple non-padded dash and bench seats front and rear. The uplevel Superinterior came with padded armrests, a sun visor, cigarette lighter, foam cushionfront seat, roll-down rear side windows and additional interior lighting.The interior looks good and the tube radio even works. Heater is not hooked up. I live in florida and decided not to plumb it when the engine was rebuilt. I drove this car around alot until I had the stroke. It has the optional 2 speed hydromatic (automatic type) transmission. It was rebuilt when the engine was gone through.
The American's frontsuspension uses upper and lower trunnions( rebuilt last year) rather than ball joints--it actuallydraws heavily from Nash's front suspension system. If serviced regularly, thissystem will last almost indefinitely under normal use.
