1938 Packard 8 Touring Sedan Description

1938 Packard Eight Touring Sedan

Purchased from the Missoula Auto Museum Only model year for the Packard Eight Caribbean Blue exterior and tan interior 282 CID L-head inline eight-cylinder engine Selective synchromesh three-speed manual transmission Four-wheel, hydraulic disc brakes, dual, side-mounted spare tire covers, fog lights and a deluxe heater

Long and dark blue, it resembles little else on the road today and will get you admiring glances and quick looks wherever you drive it. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1938 Packard Eight 5-Passenger Sedan, which was assembled at Packard’s Detroit, Michigan facility. For 1938, the Packard One Twenty became the Model Eight. This Packard was prominently displayed proudly in the Missoula Auto Museum, where it was also professionally restored.

Finished in Caribbean Blue, this car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order, with a small blemish on the passenger front door. The glass panels are clear and intact, including the two-piece windshield and split backlight. The car’s lights are haze-free and look great, including the single round red reflector on the driver’s side rear and the center-mounted brake light on the trunk, a precursor of today’s center high-mounted stop lights.

This Packard rolls on Commander bias-ply, wide whitewall tires, sized 7.00-16, surrounding factory wheel covers. Tires and wheels are in overall good order, the car’s body panels are solid and straight, including the so-called “suicide” rear doors, and the bumpers are in very good shape. Driver convenience features include four-wheel, hydraulic disc brakes, a pair of amber fog lights perched atop the front bumper and deluxe heater tucked under the dashboard on the passenger’s side.

Under the vee-shaped hood is Packard’s 282 CID L-head straight eight-cylinder engine with a Stromberg carburetor and five main bearings. Backing up that engine is a selective synchromesh three-speed manual transmission and a 4.36 rear end.

Inside, the car’s tan bench seats are in very good order, with the back seat offering generous passenger space. The brown carpet looks very good and the tan headliner is borderline immaculate. The gray instrument panel presents a contrast to the interior’s earth tones and looks fine overall, however, the speedometer’s face is very milky. A gray, three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver while the inner door panels match the seats. The mirror glass is in very good order, as is the tall gearshift lever, which was in its final year. This is a radio-delete model.

This car introduced the independent front suspension to the Packard line. Its so-called “Safe-T-Flex” suspension was an unequal upper and lower A-arm type with the largest possible lower A-arm composed of two different arms bolted together at a ninety-degree angle. Advantages claimed for the system included superior maintenance of wheel alignment from the wide spread of the lower A-arm, a permanent fixing of the caster angle and an increased percentage of the braking force transmitted to the frame through the torque arm.

Competition to this Packard in 1938 included Cadillac’s companion make, the LaSalle, Chrysler’s Airstream, Ford’s Lincoln-Zephyr and the Rolls-Royce 25/30.

This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 5,998 miles, not believed to be actual. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
