Overview:

Up for auction is my nicely restored 1966 Barracuda Formula S.I have owned this car for almost 8 years, but now it’s time to move on to other things. Approximately 2300 Formula S Barracuda’s with automatic transmissions were produced in 1966.This one was possibly among the last produced for 1966, manufactured at the Los Angeles, CA plant in May 1966.This Pacific NW car was originally purchased on May 21, 1966 from Dorn Brothers Chrysler Plymouth in Prineville, OR. I believe I am the 4th owner. Mileage reads 99,957 miles.I don’t believe the odometer has ever rolled over, but since I have no documentation, the car is being sold mileage exempt.

I purchased this car from a Eugene, OR classic car dealer in January 2010.It was on consignment by the owner who restored the car in 2008.I arranged with the dealer for a complete mechanical and visual inspection by Mark Worman of Graveyard Carz in neighboring Springfield, OR.After his inspection, I spoke to Mark on the phone for over 90 minutes.Based on his assessment, I purchased the car.

Inspection:

I am willing to work with any licensed inspector that bidders might send to look at the car.I have a 4 post lift in my garage for undercarriage inspections as well.Road tests AOK, weather permitting.

Body:

Repainted in base coat/clear coat over a very solid original car, the paint shines and looks great.There are a few small rock chips from driving and a couple scratches here and there.This is a solid car in great condition. Solid trunk floor as well as front and rear floor pans.I do believe this was an mostly rust-free car before the restoration was started, based on what I have seen during my ownership.

Interior:

New Legendary black interior installed during the 2008 restoration, including carpets, door panels, headliner, vinyl seats front and rear, and weather-stripping.It is in excellent condition. Even the AM radio works.

Drive-train:

Original numbers–matching 273 cu. In. Commando V8 (235 horsepower) that was re-built during the restoration. Mark Worman was confident it is the original engine based on the casting numbers (No engine block VIN stamps in 1966 per Mark).It does not smoke on start-up, acceleration, or deceleration. A compression test was performed during the inspection and it passed with flying colors.Torque-Flite automatic transmission was also freshened during the restoration and shifts smoothly.Transmission fluid and filter changed this summer of 2017.7 ¼ inch rear differential makes no noise or growl during operation. I am not sure of the ratio but I think it’s a 3.23 open.

Brakes/Tires/Wheels:

1 year old P195/70R14 tires with fewer than 100 miles, including a matching spare. Five MoPar 14 in. x 5.5 in. Rally wheels with small (5 on 4”) bolt pattern with new trim rings. Stainless Steel Brake Company (SSBC) front disc brake upgrade with dual master cylinder and proportioning valve; manual steering and brakes.

Upgrades/Updates:

Since 2010 I have done the following:

  • Exhaust upgraded to the correct single exhaust with a MoPar style rectangular stainless steel tip
  • Complete new PST front suspension
  • 4 Monroe gas shocks
  • 5 new P195/70R14 radial black wall tires
  • New heater core
  • New seat belts front and rear
  • Edelbrock 4 bbl. carb with electric choke (original Carter AFB included)
  • New door sill plates and carpet hold down trim plates
  • Period correct restored A-body simulated wood steering wheel (stock black wheel and horn ring included)
  • Added the MoPar Rally wheels (original OEM Barracuda mag style wheel covers included)

Reality Check:

This is NOT a rotisserie restored trailer queen with every correct nut and bolt and fastener. It is a nicely restored car, and has most of the original factory undercoating still in place.It is a great car I’ve enjoyed for almost 8 years. In the spirit of full disclosure, here are the car’s warts:

  • The 2 back windows do not roll down, something inside is jammed/dirty/broken.
  • There is some bondo in both lower rear quarters, but it is not apparent by inspection, I used magnets.
  • The inner trunk floor drop-down panels on both sides are solid with no holes.
  • Some of the aluminum/stainless trim has small dents and is a bit dull in places.
  • At some point during the car’s life, the driver’s door lower drain holes got plugged, so the lower portions of the inner driver’s door skin rusted through. The outer door skin seems to be rust-free, but the bottom of the inner door skin has several holes that the restorer chose not to repair, for some reason. With the door closed, you can’t see the holes.If you open the door and look underneath the door, you can see the holes.I had a classic car restoration shop paint the inside of the door with a POR15 type product to prevent any future rust.
  • The restorer chose to paint the car a shade or two darker color than the original factory dark green.
  • The interior was originally Citron gold (ugh!!) and the restorer upgraded it to a much, much nicer looking black.

The Financial stuff:

$1000 non-refundable deposit through Pay-Pal required within 24 hours of the end of the auction.Balance due within 7 days by bank certified/guaranteed funds or wire transfer.Once my bank confirms the funds have cleared, the title and car will be released to the buyer or the buyer’s shipper. I have a clear Colorado title in my possession, no lien.I will work with the shipping company for pick-up at my home.Buyer is responsible for all shipping charges. The car is not being advertised ANYWHERE else during this auction, so if the reserve is met, the car will sell on e-bay.Once the auction starts, it will finish. I will NOT sell the car outside of e-bay during the auction. The “reserve” is reasonable, and will not be disclosed.
