1966 Plymouth Satellite 340 Auto runs great Citron Gold Nice B-Body Mopar!!
Description
This is very nice car that needs little to be exceptional. It gets lots of attention particularly because of its condition and color combination which is perfect on the beautiful 1966 - 1967 Satellite / Belvedere scuplted lines. It starts and runs great. The cam is mild enough to definitely enhance performance but still run and idle smoothly. The paint is very nice and is the correct original Citron Gold. It has a small few bubbles down low that you need to look for to notice. There is a dull spot on the trunk that Im working on. Otherwise the paint is VERY nice and glossy and was done to a nice level.
I have a file full of receipts for various repairs, additions, chroming etc that I have done as well as previous owners. The car has been well taken care of for many years and all the hard stuff is done. I just put tires on it and I have the older Redlines that came off of it when I bought it. They are showing dry rot cracking and although they hold air fine I personally wouldnt drive on them. The rear is a Mopar Sure Grip 8 3/4 with 3.91 gears. With the current tire it runs about 2870 rpm at 55 mph. The tires are brand new Hankook 215/70/14 and have dramatically improved the handling and ride from those Redlines.
The body seams are all very nice and I haven't noticed anything to indicate panel replacement, in my opinion the body panels are likely original. The fender lines under hood all look good, the doors close great and the lines down the sides of the car are straight as an arrow. The only real blemishs I can find is what I mentioned above.
I have been working to restore the 6 pieces of aluminum trim located on top of the body sides. They are famous for dents on these cars because of their exposure and then the anodizing gets chipped and fails. I have 5 of them stripped and polished and working on the last one now. I havent done much dent removal on them yet though, it looks like that will be the next owner. The grille and headlight surrounds are very nice. Someone put silicone on the passengers vent window for some reason, maybe before the weatherstrip was reproduced....Wont open right now but I will be tackling that soon. Drivers side vent window chrome frame has some corrosion but car comes with a good replacement.
The wheels are reproduced 14 x 6 Magnum 500s from Year One and are in good shape.
Everything on the car works except what I mentioned. The backup light problem is a switch adjustment, they come on by pushing the shifter just right when in reverse. I believe the temp gauge itself is fine and just needs the correct sender.
Here are some of the highlights as well as things the previous owner and I have done over the last several years.
- Chrome Magnum 500 wheels
- The cam is a Mopar Purple Shaft - Duration 268/272 Lift .450/.455
- Front end rebuilt with PST components
- Front sway bar installed
- Hoses and water pump 2012
- Hemi style springs and torsion bars
- Ujoints
- Rear seals and bearings
- Rear brakes
- Windshield
- Big Block Radiator
Things I know that need attention:
- Fuel Gauge isnt accurate
- Temp gauge not working
- Back up lights working intermittently
- A couple scratches on the rear quarter windows
- No spare tire
- Under seat stereo working but could be better
- Dash lights rheostat worn
- Drivers seat track not going back all the way.
Im picking away at all these items, the longer I have it the more will get done.
Added: The odometer shows 17xxx miles which I believe may be the mileage since the engine was installed/rebuilt. I just found some old previous owner paperwork that shows the mileage at 119000 a few years ago when he bought it so Im betting they reset the odometer at the time of the engine since they seem to line line up roughly.
Added: I have been told the paint color is the 1967 version of the ZZ1 Citron Gold. Apparently sometime in 1966 - 1967 there was some adjustment to the formula even though the ZZ1 designation remained unchanged. This makes sense since some "Citron Gold" cars seem more green than gold. I dont see any green on this car, and actually it looks a tiny bit more gold in person than it does in these evening pictures. Any further details about this are welcome. thanks
