The aero-cars are easily one of the most sought after and valuable Mopars of all time. These cars have an almost mythical mystique, and are rarely seen outside of a museum or large private collection. Built by Chrysler with the sole intent to win on the super speedways of NASCAR, they were produced in a very limited quantity of only 1,920. This was just the minimum amount required to meet the production requirements set forth by NASCAR. Not suprisingly, due to the unique styling required for aerodynamics, the cars did not sell well when new. Most buyers could not see themselves cruising the streets of their home towns in something with such a tall rear spoiler and such attention grabbing looks. Some cars languished on dealer lots for years before finally being sold at a deep discount. Now, almost fifty years on, these cars are commanding large amounts of money whenever one exchanges hands. The beautifully restored Bird' you see here is painted in Alpine White with the standard black vinyl roof. The paint is in excellent condition, and gives this Superbird a very crisp appearance with the contrasting black vinyl "Plymouth" script on the side and black headlamp decals on the nose cone. The wheels are the factory optional 15x7.0 inch steel Rallye wheels with the optional raised white letter tires giving that classic muscle car look. Out back you will also see the optional factory bright exhaust tips with low restriction tail pipes that give this Bird' quite a nice rumble. The chrome rear bumper and optional dual exterior chrome mirror housings are in as new condition. The two tone white on black interior of this Superbird is something rare as most were done in the standard black. The seats are vinyl covered buckets up front, with a white vinyl rear bench. This is a well optioned car, with factory AM radio, locking center console with floor shifter, deluxe seat belts, tic-toc-tach, custom door sills, rear arm rests, and factory tinted windshield. Under the hood is where the magic happens, and this bird takes flight with a Super Commando 440 cubic inch V-8 with single Carter 4-barrel carburetor. This combination is good for 375 streetable horsepower and a tire shredding 480 Ft. Lbs. or torque. All this power is routed through Chrysler's well known A727 Torqueflight automatic three speed transmission and handed off to an 8.75 in. rear differential equipped with a 3.55:1 gear ratio and SureGrip. Braking is courtesy of power assisted Kelsey-Hayes 10.97 in. discs in front, with 10 inch drums in the rear. All Superbirds left the factory with the "Hemi" suspension package featuring torsion bar front and asymetrical leaf springs in the rear. Interestingly, the asymetrical leaf springs featured six leaves on the driver side, and five leaves plus two half-leaves on the passenger side to help control axle wind up. This Superbird runs and drives better than new, and it shows only 10,000 miles since restoration. These cars don't appear for sale often, and this is a rare chance to own the most well known of all 60's and 70's era Mopars.
