Description

From the time the Plymouth Road Runner was first introduced, the model was a rousing success, actually doubling sales projections in its first year and winning over a sizable legion of new Chrysler fans taken by its rugged, muscular form and unabashed performance-centric configuration. This 1969 Plymouth Road Runner is a great representative of this revered muscle car in its pivotal first generation form and is still propelled by the very same potent engine it began life with. Plymouth Chrysler took what was considered at the time to be a fairly substantial risk in paying Warner Bros. handsomely to secure use of its beloved cartoon character's name for their model, a move memorialized by the unmistakable badging on the doors and deck lid. That badging sits against a correct code F5 Limelight green exterior that presents impressively well - the paint really looks sharp, and even up close you won't find any issues to detract from your enthusiasm. The broad matte black stripes running the length of its hood are in great condition and sport razor sharp edges as they sit over a front grille and dual twin headlight casings, whose fresh appearance suggests they were recently added. In fact, all the exterior fittings on this Plymouth are in good form, especially the front and rear bumpers, which both look outright new. The windows surrounding the cabin sport clear glass and are set off nicely by a black vinyl top that's also in very good shape. From the looks of things, a lot of care went into refurbishing the interior. Originally a green bucket seat car, it now shows off a very comfortable black vinyl split bench with period-correct covers that have yet to develop any creasing or other signs of wear as they sit over the black carpeting lining the floor. The trunk area in back is downright spacious and with the deck lid raised, you can see just how clean the wheelhouses and inner quarter panels are. As you glance around, every interior component you come across looks fresh and well-restored - the door panels are perfectly fitted and the dash area looks particularly impressive with its matte black surface, clear functional gauges and table-straight dash pad. The original AM radio still occupies center stage, while just below a duo of aftermarket gauges join their factory counterparts in the cluster to keep a close read on motoring functions. The 383 cubic inch V8 holding court in the engine bay is the original power plant and it hasn't just survived over the years, it's absolutely thrived and continues to perform with enthusiasm, starting right up and idling smoothly. From the start, Plymouth intended to equip the Road Runner with inspiring performance, topping the motor with a 4-barrel carb and configuring it to churn out a strong 325 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque as it left the factory. The 3-speed automatic transmission sitting just behind it is also original and in very good working order - this classic is very much ready to hit the highway just as soon as you get it home. Featured power steering makes this Plymouth easy to navigate, while power brakes with discs up front that carry slotted and drilled rotors provide outstanding heat dissipation in real world situations while bringing its set of 15" steel wheels with BF Goodrich T/A radials to prompt stops. Looking outstanding and running in top form, this 1969 Plymouth Road Runner will afford some lucky classic car enthusiast the chance to get behind the wheel of an undeniably iconic muscle car.
