Description

When it comes to wood-sided station wagons Ford seems to get all the glory, but Plymouth's P-15 model woodies were equally nice, extremely well built and thoroughly rugged. They definitely gave Ford a run for their money. Such is the case for the rare one we have here at Skyway Classics. It is painted in green with a tan interior with saddle blanket seat covers. Like nearly all cars of the era, the 1947 wagons were based on Plymouth's 1942 model, which they were building right before World War II started but halted due to the fighting; so although the cars are five years apart; essentially they are the same car. While the main body structure was steel, the roof was a complex construction of wood slats that were then covered with an embossed black vinyl-like material that helped make the interior weatherproof. The wood used for the paneling is a combination of white ash and mahogany, both structurally very strong and aesthetically attractive. Similar to most other automobiles, a flathead engine powers this car, a straight-six powerplant with the Plymouth version displacing 217.8 cubic inches. Fed by a small single-barrel Carter carburetor, it makes 95hp and 172-lbs.ft. of torque. It has front and rear drum brakes, which for the speeds they travel are fine, stopping the car straight and true. The interior upholstery is equally as simple, being just flat vinyl stretched across a tubular metal frame, with saddle blanket seat covers on them. And the interior door panels are a single piece of wood, while the floor pan is covered with a rubber mat on green carpet. This Woody Wagon we have at Skyway Classics is a time capsule of a car that was sold just after all the Vets came home from WW2. This car is extremely rare and it is a sight for sore eyes if you can remember the cars from that era. Give us a call at 941-254-6608. We also finance!
