1971 Factory Cuda Hardtop (BS23)
This car rolled off the assembly line at Hamtramck, MI and was delivered to Southern California as a 383/auto combination, one of 1168 built. After four years of restoration and recreation work it is now the ultimate eye candy… a 71 Hemi Cuda.In 2014 an unrestored 71 Hemi Cuda hardtop sold at Mecum in Kissimmee, Florida for $560, 000.That car has a matching numbers engine transmission, and rear end.Original is great, but there is something to be said for a brand new factory Mopar Performance Hemi 472 crate motor, a Viper six-speed Tranny, and a freshly rebuilt Dana-60 rear end… as my car has!The Mecum original 71 car had a 4-speed manual and a Dana 60, as a “Super Track-Pack” option.Mine has two more gears (a positive driving change), especially since those two gears are overdrives. So you have a half million dollar car that might look better restored, but doing so could affect value; and you have here a beautifully recreated car that needs nothing to take you anywhere and costs a fraction of the original.
Starting with the base 383/auto car, I acquired and saved parts as they became available for many years (I’ve owned this car since 1990).There are a lot of NOS parts on this car that are notated in the build provided below.I will describe below the original build and then what all my years of planning developed this car into below that.I took a long time to put this plan together and I’m thankful to all the experts I have consulted over the years to get here, some of the best Mopar gurus put their two cents into this build and its truly a one-of-a-kind dream machine. Also note this has a Holley 750 carburetor on a correct matching “Shaker” baseplate. There are less than 2000 miles on this car since completion of the restoration (see pictures).
