1965 Plymouth Belvedere II - No Rust - Texas Car; Now in NJ - Best Offer - AC!
Description
Best Offer - Best Offer - Best Offer - Best Offer
Up for your consideration is a bone stock 1965 Plymouth Belvedere II solid body car. This is a factory air conditioned car with all components still in tact. The AC is not working at the moment.
There is a small patch of surface rust in the trunk - that is the only spot in the whole car. It is surface rust and with some grinding and paint, it will be fine. Root cause - we blanket left in trunk.
I purchased this car from El Paso Texas a few years ago from the estate of the man who owned it. The car sat with about 12 other old cars and was not run in over 20 - 30 years - The estate said - it should be able to start with a battery and some gasoline - man were they wrong! Long story short, the car did make its way to NJ on a trailer. I did get the car to start and run fine - I then checked the oil and saw it was milkshake - Ugggghhh maaaannnn!
I had the following overhauled:
1) A complete engine rebuild - Due to milkshake oil in the crank case. It turns out the 318 poly motor has an aluminum water pump / timing cover; and over time it just basically corroded. I was able to secure a used one from Moore's Salvage Yard (for you Mopar guy's you know these folks!).
2) The original block rebuilt by Promar Engines in Paterson, NJ and reinstalled by my mechanic.Take a look at their website, it lists everything that is done with a rebuild:
Do a search on promarengine.com
3) Carburetor rebuilt by Chicago carburetor
4) Gas tank professionally cleaned and reinstalled
5) Gas tank sending unit - installed but gas gauge still does not register
6) New Fuel Pump
7) New water pump, thermostat and hoses
8) New battery
9) Battery terminal cables / terminals
10) New starter
11) Radiator completely flushed / professionally cleaned; new antifreeze
12) New master cylinder
13) New brake shoes all around and 1 rear drum replaced - all others were in good shape
14) Front end greased including wheel bearings
15) New points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, ignition wires and spark plugs
16) Transmission filter, new fluid
17) Rear differential oil changed
18) Oil filter / oil
19) Ignition coil
Body, Underneath and Frame:
Bought this car because of its solid body. Take a look at the pictures; the lines are straight no waves, no visible signs of accidents or rust at all. It still has its factory moldings in tact. This in and of itself is rare given these cars were converted / souped up / motor swap etc.
Please take a look at the trunk - there is a rust spot - as noted above - the root cause was a blanket left in the trunk and over time it created surface rust. The picture looks worse than it is, but I figured show everything - I rather be up front vs. trying to clean it up / patch etc. Metal is solid so it is *NOT* rusted through.
Take a look underneath - the floors are solid; the pinch welds on the body are remarkably straight and most important of all? its original!
The car may or may not have been repainted sometime in its life. During my ownership, I have not done anything to it, other than wash and wax.
The exhaust appears to be factory. Solid and no rot.
Interior:
The factory interior is very presentable and nice! - - I am truly amazed it is in the great condition it is. A few notables:
1) There is a small tare on the drivers seat at belt height - its not visible in the picture; but it seems like it may have been poked with a screw driver or something to that effect. I am sure it could be patched - its about an inch size wise.
2) The drivers door armrest is broken and past attempts were made to reattach it. Its cracked so another original one would have to be procured
3) Door panels - are very presentable, drivers side has more wear than the passenger side, but with a little cleaning it will be fine.
4) Seat fabric - some stitching is loose and separating - If i was going to keep this car; I would have the seats removed and have the fabric restitched - my humble opinion of course! I am big on originality - that is why I bought this car!
5) The rear valence - solid not rotten and clean!
6) Dashboard - is steel - cleaned up nicely. The plastic chrome is presentable but has wear with its 51 years of service!
7) The glass is great - its original and not faded.
8) The clock works! Amazing and it keeps time!
9) The headliner is gorgeous - no stains, sagging or stories!
Exterior:
As referenced, the car may / may not have been repainted at some point in its life. I do see some overspray in the rear wheel well, but that is about it.
I also looked underneath to see any evidence of an accident(s), rust, repairs - the car comes up clean. My mechanic even could not believe how clean the car is!
Mechanically:
With the rebuilt motor and all the work done, its is a very drivable car. It gets up to 50 to 60 but let's face it guys; its not a restomod! It's a 51 year old car. While it is the perfect candidate for gas monkey treatment; I do not have the money, time or ability to put a Hemi and a 5 speed in there! Man this car would absolutely fly if it did! However, my preference is originality, so it is what it is!
What it Needs:
1) The car needs a wheel alignment.
2) The radio does not work - I have not looked into it. A fuse maybe?
3) The fuel gauge does not work as noted above; I replaced the unit in the tank ($100.00); but I did not bother to troubleshoot it further.
4) Needs a speedometer cable - as the needle vacillates when driving but the mileages does calculate.
5) Factory air conditioner, which is rare, is all there but it does not work - then again, I have not tried to address it as I spent way more money than I wanted to!
6) The dust covers on the wheel bearings are missing - I have my mechanic looking around the shop on what happened. All bearings were greased completely. Clearly, you can get this in Autozone for 20 bucks - I just would have preferred the originals.
7) The heat does not work - I have not looked into it; could very well be that we did not reconnect the hoses to the heater core in the event it leaked. I do not know if it leaked but I was cautious, I did not want to hurt the carpet. Note, the blower (fan ) - works fine!
8) It needs someone to take it to the next level - I blew the budget on this car - but I saved a rare classic with very desirable lines! Just about factory labor straight!
Other:
Gents, the mileage states 72xxxK and it says actual on the title. The odometer has 58k. When I was registering the car - I put in 72K, as I made a mistake in entering the mileage. So officially this car is TMU.
