1968 PONTIAC FIREBIRD 400

DELUXE INTERIOR OPTION

FACTORY HOOD TACHOMETER!

POWERFUL BUILT MOTOR!

SEEN ENOUGH CAMARO’S YET!

Although the word collector car is thrown around loosely today there are actually few vintage vehicles that truly fit the definition.

Presented here and for your consideration is an absolutely gorgeous 1968 Firebird 400 that has been in the hands of only two individuals previously!

It is my privilege to give a brief description of this Poncho’s heritage, history & condition.

This wonderful little Pontiac was actually delivered to Kennedy Pontiac in San Bernadino California straight from the assembly plant in 1968!

The original owner lived in Los Angeles and took possession of it there. His career planted him in the native state for most of his life. Unfortunately the facility where his job was formed relocated to Tulsa in the mid 70’s.

He eventually moved to Oklahoma (another rust free state) in 1979. This beautiful Firebird was transported to his new residence a month thereafter.

This particular gentleman traveled quite a bit so he utilized a company vehicle frequently. The Firebird subsequently was used on a limited basis.

Nonetheless he kept this car & a Tempest that he had purchased for his wife until his retirement in 2002 (a Pontiac family).

The next lucky owner was a firefighter who found the car at Jiffy Lube where the vehicle was being serviced.

While he was admiring it the question came up about ownership. To make a long story short the shop informed the inquiring individual that the owner expressed interest in selling and forwarded his contact information.

According to the second owner he received what was considered the call of his life about a week later.

He acquired the car shortly thereafter and enjoyed it over the following years until he began restoring it.

At this point I would like to say that this limited ownership vehicle has been pampered from day one.

The second gentleman indeed never had thought of relinquishing ownership however kids heading off to college (in need of vehicles also) changed the landscape of his priorities.

The Firebird that you see pictured here is an original (Q-1 Code) Verdoro Green car!

The original shade & hue is actually a shade lighter than the color this one is presented in.

When this beauty was repainted in 2015 by Midwest Classic Motorsports the owner & shop both decided to turn it up a notch! The base coat / clear method was used to administer the paint to the panels. The outcome, quality and finish was nothing short of amazing!

Before they painted the car it was completely disassembled. They noted that it literally needed little to no body work. This was mainly due to the way it had been protected through the years.

From front to rear I believe even the most critical enthusiast would be impressed by the cars overall appearance.

The body of this Poncho is smooth to the touch and the paint simply radiates n the sun!

The exterior maintains a high gloss shine that will make it easy for you to hold your head high if you decide to take her to your local car cruise / show!

From bumper to bumper this Firebird shows well. It has very respectable body lines and its contour is in line with production specifications.

You won’t make it a city block without someone giving you the ole thumbs up or paying homage to the vehicles lineage!

Modern muscle car owners are also always quick to show their appreciation to you for driving the force that started it all!

It’s worth mentioning that all of the exterior emblems were replaced and supplied by Aims Pontiac (correct N.O.S. parts).

The stainless and chrome on this Firebird also are very presentable & happen to be in excellent shape!

Pontiac decided to up the ante on this particular 400 with the ever so sought after factory hood tach! Not only does this component look awesome on this vehicle “it also gives a stern warning to other muscle cars & a hint that sheer power lays under the hood”!

Footnote:

Not all 400 models came equipped with hood tachometers. That being said many have been added and aren’t functional! The tachometer on this hood is a factory installed item that is fully functional & authenticated by (PHS documentation)!!!

The tach actually shines bright and lights up at dusk by activating the switch that works in conjunction with the head lights.

This unique 400 also has a super nice set of factory sanctioned hood emblems that are in superior condition!

Finally making a bold statement are the aggressively situated front & rear spoilers!

All and all at the end of the day this Pontiac plays its part well & is ready for any venue:

SHOW OR GO

Now that we have talked about this incredible Firebirds exterior lets discuss what she has to offer inside.

Upon opening the door of this model you will find a very desirable optional custom interior!

Pontiac set out to hit a homerun with its array of options in regards to comfort, luxury & options in this 400!

First off this amazing Firebird has the upgraded optional (259 code) black factory Strato custom buckets!

The seat upholstery in this vehicle is in excellent condition & absolutely stunning! There are no flaws to be found from front to rear! The seats were restored in 2012 by Bucks Classics. Just about all of the original equipment was saved.

During this process however, the car did receive new carpet & a top notch N.O.S head liner!

Another special item that the factory thought would be fitting for this car is the original “optional center console”!

The console is in great shape! If you look closely you’ll notice there’s an intimidating competition B&M performance shifter attached up front!

This shifter looks mean and really helps supply the power to the pavement! Although I am a bit of a purist I really enjoy the feeling that the cold steel gives you! I do understand that not everyone will be as excited to do so therefore I am including the original factory shifter with the sale of the car.

Every single person loves this vintage Firebird!

As previously mentioned since Pontiac was swinging for the fences with the production of this particular model it only makes since that they added wonderfully crafted deluxe door panels!

The door panels happen to be in pristine condition and have held up nicely over the past 48 years! The screaming chicken emblem even still carries the full array of colors that it was produced with.

This Firebird has a very nice packing tray & inner quarter upholstery. Lastly you can expect to find a near flawless raven black carpet situated neatly inside as well!

This one has it all! Ironically the car was even factory equipped with Air Conditioning. The second owner explained how he sent the component off to a restoration shop to have the original part reconditioned but never got it back.

That being said all of the duct work is still present if someone decides to take it to that level. The good news is that the vents inside are still present.

By the overall presentation of this vehicle “at times it is hard to be she’s been around almost fifty years”!

This little Pontiac looks, feels & drives almost better than she did in 1968!

Now that I have given several reasons why you should love it…… Let’s talk about why other muscle car owners hated it in that era!

Car and Driver magazine called the Firebird 400 a world beater in 1968! These wonderfully manufactured vehicles terrorized the drag strip & city streets when they were released!

The 400 personally best the Camaro 396 SS cars, Mustang 390’s & almost every other model in the following years!

According to all of the writers the 1968 Firebird 400 was in a class of its own!

This Firebird 400 came equipped with the ever so desirable (YT code) power plant! However that is not the motor that is in the car now.

The car now has an early 400 block that is even better than the one that came with the car from the assembly plant!

Around 2011 the second owner contacted XP Racing in Oklahoma City to install a 400 block under the hood that would give the car a level of respect worthy of its heritage!

They did this first by balancing & blue printing an early 400 block on a rotating assembly!

,br>

Molly rings and hypereutectic pistons were also enacted to ensure power & durability! This beefed up motor also received hardened push rods with flat tappet camshaft!

To protect all of the new hardware & give this 400 added boost & a performance kick is an Edelbrock aluminum intake!

I can say emphatically that it’s a thrilling ride!

Nonetheless it is very user friendly.

It’s just nice to know that the power is there on tap if you have a desire to smoke a little rubber!

The engine is no doubt the heart and soul of this pony car! However outside its performance it also leaves others in dust in regards to its dependability!

She turns over with just a flick of the key at the slightest touch! The car is reliable enough for you to drive to the next state where you can take refuge if you buy it without your wife’s permission. Seriously:

THIS PONCHO RUNS STRONG!!!!

This 400 Accelerates with ease & she simply loves the open road!

It is a must drive to appreciate vehicle!

LET’S LISTEN TO HER RUMBLE!!!

The street crowd will not only see you coming they will hear you!

This classic Pontiac has an awesome chambered dual exhaust system!

The exhaust system constantly sings a sweet note and has a distinct tone when the throttle is pushed!

Neither flow or horse power restriction is a problem…. on the contrary “it’s excellent”!

This mainly due to a massive set of long tube performance headers!

You’ll never to want to return to the garage!

All Pontiac Firebirds were really known for superior handling in this era as well!

This car doesn’t miss the mark in that category either. It almost has a semi modern feel to it when considering how well she handles. Several new suspension parts have been installed so cruising for hours on in is a cinch!

There is a fairly new radiator installed that helps keep it cool under the hood also!

Preventative maintenance has not been overlooked either.

The car has recently had new plugs, wires, alternator, battery, hoses, belts, starter and just too much more too list!!!

If you have been looking for a classic Firebird that you can enjoy without issue “look no further”!

The car has factory disc brakes that stop on a dime! The entire system has been totally gone through.

No wrestling with the steering wheel is required thanks in part to factory power steering!

To top things off there is an excellent set of flawless PMD Rally wheels tucked underneath the chassis! The beauty rings and center caps don’t have a single scratch on them either!

A set of nostalgic white letter performance tires ensure putting the power to the pavement is also a breeze!

Guys driving all the modern muscle cars today can’t help but point & give you thumbs up when driving this beauty!

Don’t miss out on your chance to own a quality investment! You may find another classic but you will be hard pressed to find one in this condition!

The time, effort & money spent restoring this car can’t be properly measured. That being said I have set a very reasonable reserve on it!

I waited to mention the most important part last!

This Pontiac has a solid structure underneath!

WHETHER THIS IS THE CAR FOR YOU OR YOU BUY ANOTHER ….DON’T RUIN YOUR EXPERIENCE BY INVESTING IN A RUSTY VEHICLE!

This vehicle has a solid frame, floor boards, quarters etc!!!

The trunk is rock solid also (equipped with spare tire)!

At the end of the day what you have here is an incredible 400 that is ready to enjoyed….needs nothing!

This is an investment grade classic car that will only continue to appreciate! Factory manual & car cover included. This vehicle will be for sale locally. I reserve the right to end the listing at any time!
