Description

1979 Trans Am Macho TA #58. Documented with copiesof the invoice from Mecham Pontiac to DKM for the upgrade to the Macho package.Solar gold with Nocturn blue Macho stripes, camel interior. Equipped with the numbers matching PWH code W72 400, 4-speed, air conditioning, 4-wheel disc brakes, power windows, tilt wheel, deluxe interior, am-fm stereo, and snowflake aluminum wheels. This car also has an ASC power sunroof. The odometer shows 42xxx miles. The previous owner stated that the miles are actual but the only documentation we have to support that is the mileage that reflects upon the title.
Mechanically the car starts and runs smoothly with good power, no smoke or unusual noises. The DKM upgraded Hurst shifter works the 4-speed precisely with no grinding or noises. The DKM twin converter exhaust burbles through the trans am splitters. The 4-wheel disc brakes andtuned suspension confidently grip the pavement and the TA handles spirited freeway driving with ease.
The dash pad displays NO cracks, carpet is nice, seat upholstery is nice with no splits, burns or stains. The console displays the numbered DKM plaque. All gauges work-even the clock.Dash and gauge faces are bright. Horn, wipers, and radio all work.Sunroof operates at the touch of a button.
The car appears to retain it's original body panels with no apparent rust or repairs.Trunk, floors, framerails and tail panel are solid with no issues.Panel fit is good and the doors shut easily. The car wears what appears to be a high quality repaint. There are some minor chips and scratches from storage and driving.Paint is very glossy and bright and shows very well.Exterior trim is excellent.Glass is very good with some minor blemishes on the drivers side window.Overall the car shows very well and attracts a LOT of attention.
According to most sources there were 98 1979 Macho T/As, and many of them had the less desirable 403 automatic drivetrain. This documented 400 4-speed Macho Trans Am represents a rare opportunity to own a distinctive piece of automotive history. I do have this Trans Am for sale locally and reserve the right to end the auction early should it sell prior to the auction ending. The best way to contact me is by calling but please feel free to text or message through eBay and I will respond as soon as possible. Have a great day and thank you for your interest.

Here is some history on how the Macho TA's came to be:

The history of the Macho Trans Am dates back to 1977 when two brothers, Dennis and Kyle Mecham, sons of a Phoenix area Pontiac dealer decided to begin modifying Firebirds to restore some of the missing performance brought about by the addition of more and more emissions equipment on factory cars. The brothers began by adding turbochargers in 1977. In 1978 203 Macho TAs would come out of the DKM shop. A W72/L78 engine was used as a baseline, the carb and ignition were modified and a set of headers and twin catalytic converters were added for a net 50bhp gain. An optional turbo-charger could also be added for a 7psi boost. Interestingly, the TAs were all sold as used cars. This was required because Federal law prohibited any modifications to the emissions system on a new car. The dealership, Mecham Pontiac, sold the new cars to Mecham Performance. The modifications were performed and the cars were then sold to the public. They had virtually no miles on them and had no tags but were sold as a used car because the had already been titled by Mecham Performance.
Production continued in 1979 where both the 400 and 403 versions of the Trans Am received the modifications required for a Macho Trans Am. DKM performed several other modifications including modifying the hood scoop to make it functional. Suspensions were also modified by adding Koni shocks, front springs retempered for rake and re-calibrated geometry. Visual appearance was also changed. Macho options included Recaro or Scheel seats, Fosgate stereo, different wheels and tires, fiberglass hood and the new paint scheme that varied by color. Every Macho TA also received a production number.
