Description

This very cool 1968 GTO convertible received a comprehensive restoration, and it combines an unusual color combination with a 400 inch V8, proving it's still the big cat in the jungle. With a new interior, a 4-speed, and receipts, this is the one to own if you like your muscle a little unusual. The all-new '68 GTO proved once again that Pontiac knew what younger buyers wanted in a performance car. More than just raw power, the new GTO was stylish, comfortable, and ideally suited to the late'60s muscle car scene. This awesome ragtop is a car that's always been loved, so it's been properly maintained and treated to a quality restoration just a few years ago. The look today proves that the car's owners have been very picky about maintenance, making this a very high-quality piece. We're pretty sure there weren't any Springmist Green (don't worry, it's pretty close to silver with just a hint of green in it) GTOs that looked this good in Pontiac showrooms in 1968, with an awesome shine, super straight sheetmetal, and panel gaps that fit superbly. The Endura bumper was game-changing, and it is in excellent condition with no cracks or damage to the paint from flexing, suggesting that proper flex additives were used during the paint process. The hidden headlamps were so popular that most people don't even realize they were optional, and there's just nothing cooler than those twin scoops on the hood signifying horsepower underneath. Chrome is a combination of original and restored pieces, giving the car a wonderful all-of-a-piece look. With Springmist Green, code 223 black vinyl is a very attractive choice. That's a 100% new interior, including the seats and door panels which are from PUI. Crisp details on the seats make them look OEM and there is no wear in any of the critical areas. Pontiac's dashboard layout was the best in the industry, with three pods ahead of the driver for the basics and an owner-added pair of under-dash gauges. The center console offers a Hurst shifter for the 4-speed manual gearbox and there's a Jensen AM/FM/cassette radio in the center that's probably overdue for an upgrade. Overhead, there's a code 2 black convertible top, replaced when the car was painted and still in fantastic shape. It also includes a matching black vinyl boot and a very correct-looking trunk with full-sized spare and reproduction mat. Power comes from what we believe is the original, numbers-matching 400 cubic inch V8. It shows a few very minor signs of usage, of course, but nothing that a weekend of elbow grease wouldn't fix and it runs superbly. Chrome valve covers were standard on the GTO and that's Pontiac Turquoise engine enamel on the block, so it looks exactly right. No modifications, no questionable upgrades, just an extremely well-finished Poncho that remains an impressive performer thanks to factory equipment. Power steering and brakes make it easy to drive, and a recent dual exhaust system adds a bit of attitude, GTO-style. The chassis is extremely clean with no damage or replaced panels, the front suspension and brakes have been fully rebuilt, and there's a new gas tank, pump, and lines to keep it healthy. Correct 14-inch Rallye II wheels with trim rings are the right choice, and they carry reproduction F70-14 redline tires to complete the OEM look. This car also includes the original owner's manual and restoration receipts to back up its great presentation. GTOs work best on the road, and this one is ready to rock.
