HISTORY OF THE PONTIAC SAFARI: Based upon the 1954 Corvette Nomad Motorama car, the Pontiac Safari wagon was produced from 1955-1957. Even though it shared many mechanical components with the Chevrolet Nomad, the Safari had a wider wheelbase and much more luxurious attributes, with nearly all top end options included as standard. Harley Earl oversaw the design to include chrome trim that flowed from the front to the rear of the car, giving a sleeker appearance. Station wagon buyers (primarily with families) looked for utility vehicles with four doors at an affordable price and did not want to forego the luxurious options coming into play in that day and time. Both Chevrolet and Pontiac buyers were reluctant to buy GM's new two-door luxury wagons and Safari sales were not initially very strong -- similar to the Nomads of the day -- but have drawn the interest of collectors over time as they sought to obtain the under-appreciated, rare and unique autos that bring top dollar and continue to appreciate over time. Over their three year run, the Motorama inspired Safaris sold just 9,094 cars while the Chevy Nomad moved 20,092 units. For 1958, the Safari name was applied to standard Pontiac wagons and GM's dream car station wagons were left to history. As of 2004, it was estimated that only 302 examples of the 1956 Pontiac Safari wagon exist, and only 37 of those resided in the state of California, making this a truly rare and unique piece of the Pontiac legacy as well as the American automotive history.
