1968 Superior Pontiac Bonneville Ambulance
Description
You are looking at a 1968 Superior Pontiac ambulance and it is of the high top body style. Superior built about 120 of these ambulances for the 1968 model year and by their nature, many of those did not survive. This car is powered by the 400 cubic inch V/8 engine, 400 automatic transmission, posi-traction rear-end and has power steering and power brakes. Originally placed in service in Florence, Oregon for Western Lane County Hospital, it later saw service with Lowell Fire Prevention in Lowell, Oregon. About ten, or twelve years ago, the ambulance moved to Illinois, where it was driven into a heated garage, where it sat until 2014, when my wife and I became the new caretakers. At that point, the car had not run in about eight years.
The ambulance will be sold just as you see it, including stretcher, 02 bottles, emergency lighting, etc.
When the ambulance arrived here in New Jersey, all of the fluids and filters were changed, including oil, transmission fluid, rear-end fluid, brake fluid and coolant. The gas tank was re-sealed, new aluminum radiator and water pump were installed, new master cylinder, wheel cylinders rebuilt, drive shaft rebuilt and balanced with new universal joints, rebuilt carburetor and the exhaust system behind the y-pipe was replaced. We also put a set of American Classic radial tires on and they might have two, or three hundred miles on them. The engine runs very strong and smooth, with good acceleration. The transmission shifts as it should and the rear-end is smooth and performs as it should. The car drives very solid and straight, the steering and brakes are responsive and there are no shimmies at 60, or 70 miles per hour.
The body has had some rust repair and the turquoise portion was professionally painted in a base coat/clear coat. The bumpers and door handles were re-chromed. The headlights, tail lights and rear side marker lights were replaced, along with the backup light assemblies. Please note, the roof was not repainted and any trim on the roof and sides of the car has not been redone, so it shows pitting, dings, etc.
The front floor pans need to be done, as they have a fair amount of rust. We have set a pair of replacement floor pans in, but they are not welded in and they are of an after-market replacement variety, so they may not be a perfect fit, however, when you sit in the car and ride, the floor feels solid enough.
The interior is presentable, however most is original. There is some discoloration on the white areas and a few imperfections in the headliner. The front seat was redone, the front floor covering was replaced. The jump seat are in good shape, the rear floor is in good condition, but has age-related wear..
The Bad! The paint shows okay, but it has lots of little imperfections. There are some dings on the hood and some minor chipping on the roof. There is still a slight exhaust leak, maybe in the Y-pipe. The siren has not been wired in, so it does not work, although it is a restored by John Dorgan Federal Double-Tone. The heater core needs to be replaced, so it has no heat. The interior lights do not work. The radio does not work. The horn works, but you must use the horn button we installed. The gas gauge does not work. The glass on the passenger sideview mirror is cracked. The button on the driver side door sometimes sticks.
To be clear, the pictures were taken about five, or six months ago, however, the car is rarely used and is in the same condition. I have tried my best to describe its flaws, as accurately as possible. In truth, it is a good looking ambulance that gets lots of attention everywhere it goes. While it may not be a perfect show car, it is very presentable. The average enthusiast should be proud to own, drive and show this rare and beautiful ambulance.
