Description

You are bidding on a 1957 Porsche 1600 Super coupe with a factory sunroof, one of the rarest options on a 356A Porsche. This is a matching numbers car. It was originally sold new to a physician in Germany. It had a catastrophic engine failure with very few miles on it during the first year after it was purchased, and the original owner returned it to the factory where a second factory engine was installed and documented on the Kardex. (See picture of COA listing both the original and factory replaced engine numbers.) The replacement engine is still in the car.

The car is very original and doesn’t appear to have had any significant damage from accidents, etc. There are no clips anywhere and it doesn’t appear to have ever had any rust repair in the past. Other than the change from Meissen blue to white paint sometime in the past, there do not appear to be any significant changes to the car from how it was delivered new. The original options listed on the COA all seem to still be with the car, including the original Blaupunkt radio.

I don’t know if the engine turns over, as I have not checked it, but you can be sure it will need a complete rebuild. The engine has Weber carbs and a later distributor on it at present, but I purchased the correct Solex PICB 40 carbs, air cleaners, and intakes, as well as the correct VJ4 BR9 distributor a few years ago, and they go with the car. (See pictures of these and a set of NOS bumper overriders, which are correct for this European delivered car and go with the car to the new owner.) Everything else on the car is correct and present, I believe.

As you can see in the pictures, this car will need some sheet metal repairs, along with floors and longitudinals. However, it is a matching numbers 1600 Super 356A with a rare factory sunroof, which makes it a very desirable restoration candidate.

Although the tires are flat now, I will have the car in rolling condition for your transporter.

I expect payment within 5 days of the end of the auction. The car can be picked up after your check has cleared my bank. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, but I can give the name of a good, reliable shipper if you wish. Buyer will be given a Bill of Sale and the North Carolina Title I received when I bought the car.
