1978 930 53324 original miles! Dad's favorite car.
Description
Its with a very heavy heart that I offer this 1978 Porsche 930 for auction. It was my dad's favorite car, and the car he kept longest in his collection. But I have come to the conclusion that I do not have the emotional strength, or the time to finish this and do it the justice it deserves.
My dad purchased this from the original owner in 1979 with just under 25 k miles. He drove it on weekends and special occasions until about 1995 and racked up the mileage you see listed.
In 1986 ish, he had Carrera tensioners installed along with euro spec Mahle pistons and jugs, and upgraded studs. The thermal rectors were removed at this same time, and a set of euro spec headers were installed as well. We still have the original jugs and pistons on a shelf here.
At that point the paint was losing its shine. After some digging we found out that the original dealer had coated the paint with "Polyglycoat" paint sealant. Seems it did not work well with the lacquer base coat on Porsches. We also learned that Porsche along with quite a few other auto manufactures had issued warning that this would cause the problems we were seeing. So "Willy" was parked in storage and the search for a good painter was undertaken.
Over the years we had it looked at by several very reputable shops, as far away as CA, to find someone that would do the job to factory standards. There was even some talk with Porsche AG of having the car returned to the factory for a complete repaint. In 2015 a painter was found that agreed to do the work, to factory level, and my fathers standards, in lacquer. We were find the correct paint and have it sample matched to the original factory color.
A year long disassembly process, with all parts being bagged and noted. Each sub assembly was removed, inspected, and notes taken for reassembly. All of the parts( nuts, bolts, and body fasteners) were bagged, and indexed on a rolling inventory cart. Large parts were boxed and noted.
This was not to be your typical respray, but a factory level complete repaint of the exterior to perfectly match the way the car came from the showroom. Multi coat, hand rubbed and buffed, with the plan being to use two plus gallons of the matching paint.
Unfortunately, my father passed way in late January of 2017, and did not get to see this project through to completion. I really want to finish it, but my business has grown over the last several years, and I do not have the time. I also get very upset when I get around this car because frankly I miss my dad very much and Willy is a strong reminder of his passing.
Dad was a life long member of the PCA, and loved Porsches. From his first speedster, to the 2014 Cayenee he was driving at the time of his passing, he had pretty much every model over the years. In his estate, he left 8 different Porsches. He was an avid driver, and racer, who raced Porsche 911's in the early Trans-am under 2.0 series as well as B sedan in SCCA. He was good enough to have finished a very close second in the 1968 running of the SCCA Runoffs at Riverside. He was the best driver I have ever seen. The man could drive a 911.
I am offering Willy here on ebay in hopes that someone will understand the love my dad had for this car, and carry on the restoration to the same level he was expecting. This is a very tough decision on my part to part company with this car. But as I said before. I just get too emotional when around it.
Please, no tire kickers, no speculators, and no dealers that want to turn a quick buck. This car NEEDS to go to someone who will honor the legacy, return it to its original factory state, and love it the way my dad did. I know there is someone out there who will do these things.
