Reutter SC Coupe #127095

When the Porsche 356 appeared in 1948, few could imagine the impact that this small, streamlined sports car, which was based on a Volkswagen platform, would have in the decade and a half to come. The car that Ferry Porsche created proved its worth in competition almost immediately; it brought class victories across a wide variety of events, from Le Mans, where it won the 1,100-cubic centimeter class in 1951, to rallying and hill climbs. By the end of the decade, it was clear that this pint-sized rear-engined car was a true giant killer. It created the foundation for a road and track dynasty that continues today.

Porsche steadily developed the 356 to add power, improve handling, and provide increased comfort. The introduction of the 356 C in 1963 saw the introduction of 4-wheel disc brakes, and the 95 hp SC engine refinements.

This is an extraordinary example of what might be considered the last and best of the 356. It came equipped with the SC motor and factory chromed wheels and was a radio delete.

This 356C was believed to have been delivered to Arizona and was there for 20 years and was then moved to the Long Beach, CA area, then to Arcadia where it went through it’s extensive ground-up rotisserie restoration. The second owner had another car that he drove daily the entire time he had this car, so the Porsche was sparingly utilized as a weekend/fun car.

The third owner was extremely passionate about Porsche and spent two to three years refitting the car to original. He then sold the car in 2014 to the current owner. The current owner is selling part of his extensive collection.

No reproduction parts were used in the restoration; all items fitted were either new, genuine Porsche or NOS. The paint is flawless, shows beautifully, and the panel fit is superb and tight, with even gaps, which is so vital to obtain when duplicating the exact build quality of these cars from when they were new. The wonderfully fawn leather interior, and the engine compartment are finished with all correct factory finishes and details.

The results are impressive to say the least. This vehicle has been shown at local Southern CA venues and impresses wherever it goes.

BODY & PAINT

The body, paint, chrome, trim and rubber are all in brand new condition since the completed restoration in 2014. The body is extremely straight and appears to have had very little body work required to bring it back to its original glory. Take a look at the shut lines and you will see just what I am referring to. The paint is smooth and orange peel free with no dings, scratches or abrasions. I would have to rate the paint and body at a 10 out of 10. There appears to have been no damage ever to the body panels of this vehicle.

Chrome is a 10.

INTERIOR

The Interior was completely restored and has a wonderful original look to it. The seat material looks identical to the original style and texture. German Square Weave Carpet was applied to the floors and is the highest quality available. The seats were completely rebuilt with all new foam and all side metal pieces were rechromed, even the seat rail bases appear to have been powder coated and rails appear to either be new or were cleaned and polished. All gauges were redone, cleaned and rebuilt, including the chrome bezels by North Hollywood Speedometer, renowned for concour restoration work on Porsche, Mercedes and BMW. The clock works. I would rate the interior as a 10.
The Undercarriage is in fabulous condition and showcases the easy rust-free life this car has lived. The longitudinals are in perfect untouched condition. During the restoration process the original undercoating was stripped and lightly recoated to an original fresh factory look. Note everything was stripped and refinished to new condition. The front end is all completely new during restoration.

Today, this 356C is presented in true #1 condition, showing very little use since restoration. The original factory color on the car was Light Ivory, but had been repainted Red at some point in it’s life. When the car was going to full rotisserie restoration the owner decided it should be done in Black, to some, the absolute best color on a 356.

The car comes with a reproduction tool roll, including a spare fan belt. Less than 300 miles have been covered since the restoration, the car is exceptionally well-sorted mechanically. This Porsche drives as good as it looks, and it is ready to transport its next possessor back to the mid-1960s, when this car was delivered to its doubtlessly delighted first owner. It starts up immediately, idles wonderfully; drives straight down the road and brakes with authority.

The COA comes with the car. The CA Black Plates do not come with this car and are for display purposes only. If you are a CA buyer, you can find a set of these black plates and apply them to this vehicle under the CA YOM (Year of Make) Program. A nice set of black plates start around $250 and go easily to $600 for a concour restored set.

In the grand scheme of sports car history written fifty years from now, the late 1950‘s and early 1960s will surely be considered part of the infancy stage. This will be known as the era when sports cars were real sports cars, seat of the pants, simple and more than fun to drive. In this era when it came to sticking the rubber to the planet Earth nobody delivered it better than Ferry Porsche and his team of engineers. Simple air cooled boxer engines ruled the day. Those days are forever gone and while Porsche still pushes the envelope in every manner possible there is just something magical about a Porsche from this era that truly epitomizes the real spirit of sporting cars.

If you are looking for a fine example of the 356 SC, sorted mechanically and show worthy inside and out, then this may just be the car for you. I would not hesitate to jump in this 356 and take a cross-country trip tomorrow.

Just as a matter of reference, I have been judging cars at all types of show levels for over 20 years and have extensive experience in restoration of many marques. I personally own a Porsche 356C and a ’96 993. I am extremely picky and probably grade more on the lower side when evaluating vehicles. I would consider a 10 on my scale to be a Concour Quality vehicle, just so you have a reference. This car is a VERY high quality motorcar and is in Concour condition from my perspective.

356. For millions of people in the world, just a number. For some, however, it is the numerical code for a phenomenon that defies technical description. To put it another way: for them, it is the legend of the Porsche 356.
