Description

After a tremendous amount of soul searching, I have decided to list my 1984 Porsche 911 Targa for auction. It is a car that I have wanted to own for a very long time and have truly enjoyed, but my use of the car and the desire to move onto another "bucket list" car makes this the right time. Please bear with the length of this listing as I am trying to convey lots of detail to interested parties and trying to make sure you leave this item with a very good sense of what this car is and how nice it is. I am not a dealer, or one who buys cars and flips them. I am a car guy, blessed with a good career and the ability to buy cars that I truly enjoy and that are ver, very nice cars to own and drive. This 911 is certainly that. I purchased this car three years ago from a 73 year old gentleman in Pennsylvania. He owned the car since 1992 and purchased it with approximately 20,000 miles on it. Prior to his ownership, the car belonged to an opthamologist in New Jersey who drove the car sparingly. It is reportedthat the original owner was a band member from Bon Jovi, and the prior owner believed the name was Tico Torres, the band's long time drummer. The car was sold new in New Jersey, but records simply don't exist to verify that ownership. That said, the prior owner was quite emphatic that this was the case. An interesting fact but not really anything that can add value. This 911 Targa was driven sparingly by the previous owner and had 52,110 miles when I purchased it. It wasalways covered and never used in any inclement weather. It is an incredibly original car, with original paint, interior and even original targa top. Admittedly, the top shows some aging at very close inspection, but works well and is very presentable. It was repaired in a small area years ago, and remains durable with a tight fit. I never fold the top and only take it off on reliably nice days. To keep sun and dust out, I have a cover-it convertible cover that covers the full glass areas ( front, sides, back) and affixes to door latches and wipers to stay secure, Does the trick and keeps sun off the interior. The paint is extremely nice and shows very well. It does have a number of small stone chips onthe hoodfrom years of use that have been touched up over the years and a small area that was buffed thin on the hood. Even with those, it is a striking car at any distance, near or far. It is not a ten footer by any means and the paint has been carefullymaintained. I always receive compliments every time I drive the car. The prior owner did have the rockers re-sprayed professionally about five years ago to dress up wear from tires throwing dirt and stones, and the match is excellent. He actually regretted doing it afterwards as he was a stickler for originality. I am that way as well and have resisted recovering the targa top for that reason or making any changes not necessary for maintenance. A new owner may choose to recoverthe targa top, and that would be fine as well. I just prefer originality. The trunk is perfect and includes the original and complete tool wrap and a Porsche air pump. The rear wing is an original Porsche item, but was added when new by the first owner, a not uncommon practice. The wing is excellent and the rubber is supple and in perfect shape. All glass is flawless and the Targa bar is as well. The interior is completely original and is outfitted with cocoa mats which are a nice period correct look. The leather is soft and has no rips, tears or separations. The dash is exceptional as well but does have a very, very small (1/8 inch) crack near the passenger defrost vent. This was there when I bought the car and has not progressed whatsoever. The car is rarely exposed to sun, so that helps greatly with regard to these dashes. Everything in the car works as it should. All gauges, clock, knob, switches, etc.. Everything. I have the factory original radio whichworks and took it out to preserve it. I replaced it with a replica Blaupunkt cassette radio from Southwest Radio which looks completely stock and original and works well. The original power antenna is still in place and works as well. The car was fit from the dealer with an Alpine amp and appropriately located speakers. All work as they should. The car also has A/C and it works well. The compressor was near new when I purchased the car. All other components are original and function well. I do not use A/C at all here in Maine, but I do run it periodically to keep things lubricated and working well. All heater controls work perfectly and well.Carpets and all interior items are exceptional and original. This 911 also has factory cruise control which is unusual and works as it should. Mechanically, the car is extremely solid and very well maintained since new. I have all records from the prior owner dating back to his purchase in 1991 and the original owners manual that shows all previous service stampings. Maintenance history is impressive and the car received everything it needed at all services. Brake fluid changes every two year, lube, oi, filter with high ZDDPVR-1 Valvoline and any other maintenance necessary. When I purchased the car, I had it completely serviced at a Porsche specialty shopand at that time replaced rear CV joint assemblies ( boots had torn and we did not want any issues) as well as a comprehensive tune up. The car starts easily, runs strong and has great oil pressure at all times. it uses no oil and is a delight to drive. I did remove and store the catalytic converter and replaced it with a powder coated test pipe. Keeps the heat level down and it let me preserve the original cat. The mechanicals are stock, though a Steve Wong chip was put in by the prior owner. No issues at all and a common upgrade for the 3.2 motors. The transmission, a 915 version 5 speed original to the ca, shifts smoothly and has no synchromesh issues whatsoever. All fluids were changed when I bought the car. The tires are new from last year and were replaced only because they were eight years old and getting dry/hard. The new Continentals are exceptional on the car and are 16 inch staggered from the factory on original Fuchs rims that are also perfect.
At 58,075 miles (I've driven the car a couple times since the photos), this is a very low mileage example with records to verify its mileage accuracy and service history that is reliable and impressive. I have only driven this car approximately 3000 miles since buying it three years ago, and it receives far more attention in the garage than on the road. That is pretty much how I roll when it comes to the collector cars I own. They are carefully maintained and sparingly used. I have all service records from the prior owner and from my service work which date back to 1991 when he purchased the car. Prior to that I have all service stamps from the Porsche dealer for all work from new.Service history is extremely important and valuable to know for these cars. I also have a Porsche certificate of authenticity, original brochure, Bentley's repair manual and several other "collector" items that will go with this car. I am also including the very portable Covercraft targa cover that goes over the top and glass areas and a full interior cover custom fit to the car. Both in excellent condition.
This car can be driven and done so with complete confidence. It is an awesome car to drive and runs perfectly. It has never been raced or tracked. This is a car that was carefully and lovingly maintained by all previous owners and it shows. There are always stories on the internet, but this car is a genuinely nice private owner car that will find a new owner who will not at all be disappointed. You can bid with confidence and hopefully this description conveys how nice the car really is. I have purchased cars on ebay before, both collector and daily drivers. I know how important it is to be dealing with an honest seller and how good it feels to have the car roll off the truck better than expected. It is the way it should be and the way the new owner will feel with this car. Thank you for reading through this listing. If you are looking for an air cooled Porsche that exemplifies the very best version of the original 911 ( before technology and water cooled cars took their place), then this is an exceptional opportunity for you to consider. I will work with the new owner to make sure that the car gets to the transport vehicle safely and that everything noted in this description gets to the new owner. Thank you.
