Description

Up for sale is my 1978 Targa. This is a very nice and well maintained example with documentation going back to day one. I purchased the car from the original owner . Ive owned the car for 2 years. The original owner did his due diligence with maintenance and up keep and the mileage has been documented progressively on his invoices from 1978 right up to my ownership. The car is completely rust free and has spent its entire life here in Huntington Beach CA. The car has always been garaged and or covered.
I took care of having the head studs and clutch replace, installed new soundpad, targa seal, and front windshield and seal. I had all the CIS intake boots replaced and injectors cleaned. The car has oil fed Carrera tensioners installed, and the valves were adjusted at 111K miles. The car does not leak or drip oil.
In short this car runs like a champ. It fires right up every tim, warms up at 1200 rpms and then drops to 950-1000 rpms in about 1 minute and is ready to drive. To say this car runs "great" is an understatement. It really scoots. It has amazing throttle response. There is no valve noise and the motor is very quiet. I did a compression test and leakdown at 111,000 miles on 11/25/16 with results as follows:
compression leakdown(1) 142 (1) 95/100 (2) 145 (2) 96/100(3) 147 (3) 95/100(4) 145 (4) 94/100(5) 148 (5) 95/100(6) 142 (6) 95/100
This car retains the factory ride height and has never been lowered. The car handles very well. The Fuchs wheels are 15 x7 front and 15x8 back. The Sumitomo tires have a couple thousand miles on them.
The transmission shifts smooth throughout all 5 gears with no effort going from 1st to 2nd. Butter really...seriously. The car shifts into 1st while rolling too. I installed all new bushings at the shifter and coupler. The suspension is sound and has needed no work during my 2 years of ownership.
The paint is the original Grand Prix White color but I believe some panels have been resprayed professionally during the cars 39 year life.It shines and shows beautifully and the clearcoat is in excellent shape. Id give it a solid 8-1/2. Very clean and super easy to keep looking clean. There are a couple tiny chips here and there, but no rust or dents or signs of accidents. The car has a very classic look to it with the stainless Targa bar, polished Fuchs, bright aluminum window trim, and chrome head light rings. The car gets compliments every time I drive it. I have the white headlight rings and will include them with the sell.. The original owner had the rear and door windows tinted dark and they provide a very private ride when you want it. The electric windows completely open and close although a little slow.
The interior is black with no cracks on the dash. The leather seats are in solid shape for their age. There is one small tear on the bottom cushion of the passenger seat close to the backrest. I had the Coco mats custom made to fit the car and they add to the vintage look. I removed the sun visors a year ago to open up the view but will install them for the sale. All gauges including the clock are functioning properly. All electrical wiring and fuses are in good shape. All turn signals, brake lights, emergency flasher, backup lights, lic plate light, high / low beams working as they should. E brake working and holds car on a hill. The electric side mirrors operate as they should. Both doors open and close as they should. They don't need to be slammed shut or yanked open.
The aftermarket alarm system works well . The aftermarket radio is a Pioneer with CD player and works well and sounds good from all 4 speakers.
The AC system components are all intact but its not currently blowing cold. I never messed with it or needed it, or cared about it since I've had the car. I usually have the top off when I drive it. The Targa top is in good shape and goes on and comes off with ease and I never fold it up when removed.
The car is just a great looking, well running, fun to drive machine.
I've done my best to give an honest assessment and accurate description of this car.I've seen some of the cars people in this market try to pass off as a good car and get top dollar for.Im looking to get out of this car what I have in it and just break even.I purchased an 88 Carrera last summer and that will be my 2nd car when I'm not driving my work truck.I dont have the space or need 2 911's so I'm passing this one on for someone else to enjoy.
I believe the leakdown numbers tell the tale regarding the condition of the motor.I welcome anyone to look over the car as long as they come to the car.I wont be dropping it off at some shop and having stuff dismantled on my car. All the work on the car has been done by the same local Porsche shop for years and everything has been gone through.Everything can be verified with receipts.
I will require a $500 non refundable deposit to the winning bidder within 24 hours. All inspections need to be done prior to bidding on the car if your not sure of what your looking at.The balance of the payment needs to be made in cash or wire transfer within 7 days of sale.
I'm only interested in dealing with serious buyers.
If I left something out and you have a question I'm happy to answer.
Thank you for looking.
