Description

I'm downsizing my car collection of mostly Saab's and Volvo's and offering for sale this rare "one-of-a-kind" 1970 Saab "Woody wagon". If you are looking for a totally stock Saab wagon of this vintage, this is not the car for you. If you are looking for something fun and distinctive to hop in and drive around town, take to Cars & Coffee or your next car show, this is the one! I've owned over a hundred cars and this one, hands-down, gets more attention than any other. If you are the type that hates total strangers coming up to you at the gas station or at the store to ask a million questions... then don't buy this car. VW beach buggies are everywhere... here's something no one else has and less than half the cost. Priced to sell.
First of all, Saab never made a wood-sided wagon and the wood grain you see in the photo's is not actually wood but the original panels professionally air brushed to look like wood grain. I get compliments s at every car show about how real it looks. I purchased the car already restored so unfortunately do not have the specifics on who did this magnificent work of art, but it is artist signed on the lower right side of the tail gate. The rest of the car has been painted a non-stock color that matches the blue in the Swedish flag...slightly richer/darker than what you see in some of these photo's shot on a cloudy winter day (3/25/2019). The first 5 images were taken last summer and are a much better reflection of the color in person.
The title states 74,378 original miles, as per the previous owner, and I have added another thousand miles during my ownership. The odometer was swapped out at some point so I have no clear knowledge of actual miles. I believe the V4 engine was pulled and rebuilt at some point with a Weber carb, electric fuel pump and custom Saab headers added. It starts and stops as it should and runs exceptionally well...burns no oil and leaks no oil. It drives down the road as it should with a bit of a lean in the corners as has been my experience with a few other 95's that I have owned over the years. The clutch works well. It's a 4-speed manual on the column.
The front seats are from a 2001 Saab 9-3. While they are not obviously original to the car, they are infinitely more comfortable than the originals. These are electric seats but not currently wired for power. I had the seats hooked up to outside power, adjusted them to my driving position and left them that way. The new owner can adjust to their driving position. I'm 6-2, 210 lbs and fit comfortably behind the wheel. The seats are very clean with no tears or rips. The back seat and rear facing jump seat are original to the car. The spare tire (with cover) is located under the back seat.
The dash has been restored with a nice quality faux wood fascia, VDO gauges (all work) and an original clock (also works). The steering wheel is a rare Saab wood monte carlo style wheel. The dash top has been recovered and is in excellent shape. Take a look at the photo showing the custom wood slat headliner! Just one more detail that makes this car very special and like no other.
This Saab 95 is riding on painted stock wheels with chrome trim rings and original Saab wheel caps. The tires are Vredestein Sprint Classics (155 SR 15) with good tread remaining.
A custom chrome and wood roof rack has been permanently attached to the roof and yes, the surfboard comes with the car.
I had two new rear brake cylinders and new rear brake lines installed just this week along with a fresh oil/filter change. At some point two years ago I broke my key off in the ignition lock cylinder on the steering column. It's a long story but we were unable to get the old cylinder out of the car so there's a new ignition switch and key in the dash where the cigarette lighter used to be. Glass is good all around with some very cool decals to complete the surf car look. The front windshield glass has some very minor delamination at the bottom corner edges. There is typical surface rust underneath on some areas underneath and I've posted photo's for identification. There are the usual small nicks and scuffs- while not a perfect concours car, car show attendees and judges seem to love it.
Saab's have quite a large community of owners and collectors and parts are easily found with a few minutes looking online. There are several reliable U.S. suppliers for even the most obscure parts. The Saab V4 engines, sourced by Saab from Ford/Europe, were used for many years and are quite durable. Want some new friends fast? Buy a Saab and join the club with most loyal car enthusiasts on earth!
In the relatively few years of my ownership I've won numerous car show trophies, including a top 10 at the National Import show at Carlisle in 2017 ...it won best foreign car at a large local show last summer.
In person inspections are welcomed and encouraged because evaluating the condition of these older cars is so subjective. Garaged just outside of Charlottesville, Va. The car is sold as-is. Yes you can drive this one home but the farthest I've ever driven it is 4 hours from home and, since it's an almost 50 year old vehicle... shipping is encouraged and I'm happy to work with your carrier (I can even recommend a great shipping broker that I've used before). If you have any questions, send them through Ebay email and I usually respond in less than 24 hours.
Serious offers considered. I'm not in a must sell situation, just scaling back a collection that has become too large for me to handle. If you have less than a feedback score of 10, email me first. Thanks for looking.
