1965 Shelby Superformance Cobra
The rare car market can be fraught with inconsistency, lost documents, and can make it difficult for one to discern what is original and what is not. Then you have a 40-60 year old vehicle to contend with mechanically, and there is a learning curve there as well. A rare car is a wonderful thing if you can afford it, and it is truly well documented. Enter the kit car era, where one can get a replica body, put in what they want, and voila! They have an original looking rare car but totally drivable with little worries about maintenance.
In the kit car market, there are kit cars, then there are replicas. This Superformance body is hand made in South Africa and shipped to the US for distribution. This is the ONLY company that claims to be officially licensed by Carroll Shelby. Done so because of the exactness of the replica, and the way Carroll Shelby would have wanted them done. This car has many offerings as extras, so read carefully, and fall in love with a Superformance replica dressed to the nines.
Exterior
Built as a manufacturers demo vehicle, this dark blue replica has 5 coats of a nano ceramic clear coat, on virtually every surface. Consigner states that cleaning this car is a dream as you just spray with water and wipe dry. Nothing sticks to it! A bolt on hard top matching the exterior gives this car a very distinguished look, and something to study because a hardtop on a Cobra is truly rarely seen. A convertible soft top is included with this car as well, a tonneau cover, and a soft indoor car cover. Wheels are billet aluminum Shelby knockoffs...exact replicas of the originals, but these are 100 percent polished aluminum, and are for street use. Wrapping these special wheels are Nitto drag radial 275/35ZR18's in front, and rears are 335/30ZR18's also Nitto. A very sticky compound made for handling. Special tools are included for removing and installing knockoff wheels. Special side curtains which snap on side window areas are coming with this car as well, so you can drive in any weather, although snow would really be a challenge! For night driving car is equipped with Grote LED high and low beams. Also, the absence of side pipes add to the distinguished look.
Interior
Leather buckets covered in black mimic the original. The small driver's compartment is covered in black carpet, a beautiful gauge encrusted signed dash, and correct gear shifter. This car has a heater with a 3-speed fan that blows toward the driver and passenger. Consigner states that the original odometer/speedometer was replaced 8 months ago at which time it had 3,300 miles clocked and will accompany the car when sold. The new odometer shows 500 miles. An accessory billet fire extinguisher is seen but has never been filled.
Drivetrain
A Roush Ford 500hp crate motor which is a 351ci Windsor V8 bored and stroked to 427ci. As seen, it has a dress up kit with plenty of polished hardware. A Tremec 5-speed manual transmission is bolted on back. An aluminum radiator and oil cooler front the engine and reside within the front cowl opening.
Undercarriage
Plenty of candy here as well including a ZF independent differential mounted in a cradle just like the original Cobras. Final drive is 3.40:1. Recently fitted with an electric power assist steering unit with an adjustable boost potentiometer under the dash so you can choose from full power to no power steering. Wilwood power disc brakes are on all 4 corners. Nary a sign of anything except dust.
This Superformance Roadster configuration which is intended for street use, has inboard exhaust, no roll bars, no stripes and front and rear bumpers. A very "civilized" version of the Cobra sports wipers, an ashtray, full carpeting, and heating. Ohh darling! ... lets go for a hair raising tool around the winding roads in my Cobra!
