Cobras are special to just about everyone, and seeing one on the road is always an event. Even if you don't know a thing about cars, you know that this 1965 Cobra replica is a fast car. Built by Superformance, one of the leading Cobra manufacturers, this bright red roadster packs a snarling 408 cubic inch Windsor V8 for brutal acceleration and a level of fit and finish that you rarely see on modern Cobras.Without knocking your knuckles on the car's skin, you'd be hard-pressed to tell this one from an original. Superformance is one of the most accurate Cobra manufacturers and they took great pains to get the shape exactly right before they started pulling molds. As a result, this super slick little roadster looks like a million bucks, with great lines and an awesome shine that definitely makes it stand out. The factory-applied Titanium paint job wears shiny black Lemans stripes and you can see the attention to detail in the way the stripes wrap around the grille opening and into the trunk. The heavy-duty fiberglass is a lot more durable than the fragile aluminum originals and thanks to years and years of development, Superformance knows how to build one that stays looking fresh, even when used as intended. Other authentic pieces include rivets around the hood and scoop, the chrome hoop behind the driver, and correct 427 Lucas-style taillights. They nailed the interior as well, with supportive black buckets that really grab and hold you while you're running hard. That's real leather on the seats and dash, and the overall look is extremely good with just minor signs of use since it was completed. Full carpets help control noise and heat and a wood-rimmed Shelby steering wheel adds a period-perfect touch. Correct Smiths gauges, including a reverse-rotation speedometer, are part of the Superformance package that makes this car feel extremely authentic from behind the wheel. The forward-canted shifter was actually a Mustang piece that the Shelby engineers reversed to make it work in the Cobra, although in this car's case, it's connected to a Tremec 5-speed instead of the usual Toploader. No heater, no radio, nothing that gets in the way of performance, which is just the way God and Ol' Shel himself intended. The trunk is rather nicely finished in black carpets and it comes with a top frame in case you'd like to have a top made to seal things up.Cobras will accept just about any engine you can imagine, and the 408 cubic inch V8 this one carries delivers big block power without the big block weight. Built by Competition Motorsports in Hamilton, Ohio, it's based on a seasoned '74 block with a steel crank, Eagle rods, J&E forged aluminum pistons, and a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads. It's fed by a big Holley 750 double-pumper carb on an Edelbrock intake manifold, and there's a custom UltraDyne full roller valvetrain inside. A correct expansion tank works with a recent radiator and twin electric fans to keep the big block cool, and with satin black side pipes, not even the owners of real Cobras will be able to tell the difference. Superformance's rectangular-tube chassis is super-rigid and offers upgrades like an A-arm front suspension with coil-overs, rack-and-pinion steering, and a trick independent rear end. There's also a big disc brake at each corner and it's outfitted with gorgeous Halibrand knock-offs and staggered 255/60/15 front and 275/60/15 rear Goodyear Eagle radials.Nicely built and a lot more accurate than many of the replicas out there, this Superformance Cobra recreates the authentic Cobra experience at a fraction of the cost.
