1961 Studebaker Champ Pick-up truck
I 've owned this car for some 20 years and it will be hard to see it go, it's quite the unusual vehicle. Having only seen one other, it is almost certain that you can go anywhere and not see another. People tend to gawk at the truck because they have never seen one, (As I did when I first saw it). It is kind of fun to put in a parade, show or cruise night The Truck is the ugly duckling that you fall in love with. The Champ is the equivalent of the more famous Ranchero and Elcamino.
It has a 5.0 Roller from a Mustang and it is very dependable and literally starts on the first crank every time. The alternator is a one wire GM style with a 5V belt. It gets decent fuel mileage as it has an OD overdrive automatic transmission with vintage Mustang shifter. The stainless headers are factory Mustang style. It has a factory style aluminum 4V intake manifold with vintage air cleaner and Edelbrock 650 CFM carburetor with electric fuel pump. Started with a mini Ford starter with solenoid mounted on it. It has stainless outboard mufflers with 3"pipe style resonators; Nice mild sound nice that's not obnoxious. The original radiator has a large pull flow electric fan and runs cool with 180 thermostat. The wiring has been upgraded with extra push in fuses.
The interior has a custom padded dash a new seat cover and custom door panels with speakers, and AmFM Cd player, and older, but still good carpet and vintage seatbelts. And it still has the original Factory rear sliding window, a first for any truck.
It still retains the neat original straight axel front suspension but has been upgraded with Cadillac 12" disc brakes up front, which GREATLY improved stopping capabilities, even without power assist and also upgraded with duel master cylinder. Amazingly it cruises down the road nice and stable. Front tires are almost new and more than half tread in the rear. It has a York bedliner with minor modifications that looks like it was made for this truck
The paint is recent and body is overall fair to good, The bottom of the doors have been replace with ALL metal. The advertising is PAINTED on, and then worn off to make it look 60 years old! "The common sense cars and Trucks," was and ad from the early 60's and the "All new 61 Studebakers" is painted over a "60" for the genuine look(so there is a "0" in the background). The It looks much better in to see in person; the door advertisement and paint scheme always seems to get a ''WOW that's cool.''
It has been serviced Spring of 2019 oil, filter, lube, and radiator flush. Overall is good shape but needs a little TINKERING, The Windshield has a crack but NOT in the field of vision, as the rear mirror blocks it. The drivers side window is plastic and the passenger side is laminated glass (as factory) but it was cut to wide so it's tight in the track. And if the fuel tank is topped all the way up it has drips a little (only when over full, and has been this way for 20 years). Overall a good and fun truck, that you can get in and drive.
