Description

Very nice, original 1983 Toyota Pickup 4X4 SR5 long bed withBrahma shell. Has 163,840 miles on original 22R motor and original tranny. This is the loaded SR5 model(as indicated by the letter “S” in the VIN #). Thisincludesrecliningbucket seats (this is an 83 feature, 79-82 SR5’s had non-reclining bucket seats). It has full length arm reston the door panels. It has carpeted floors, carpeted lower door panels and carpetedcab back, behind seats. It has the SR5 3-spoke steering wheel and the wood grain dash bezels, tachometer, trip ohmmeter, oil-voltage pod, center console. Also has the original factory AM/FM stereo radio that works. This truck came with chrome packagewhich includes chrome bumper, grilland headlight bezels, and chrome SR5 wheels. It came with factory AC (still blows cold) and factory power steering.

This truck has always been a California truck purchase fromToyota ofCerritos in So Cal.Itstill has the original dealer license plate holder.I’m the third owner. The 2ndowner was an auto mechanic that took good care of the truck mechanically.I currently own two Toyota 4X4’s (my other is an 82) and I’ve own a total of 4of these trucksover the years. I’m sort of a Toyota, 1stgeneration 4X4 enthusiast. I purchased this 83 almost 4 years ago because it was inoriginal unmolested condition.

The few thingsthat I’ve donetothe truck I didwith meticulous attention to detail and I tried to keep as close to original as possible. For example I had the truck repaintedmainly for two reasons. Firstthe original paint was fadingand second there was some light surface rust starting to show. I wanted to get on it right away.I painted it with the original Toyota color that was mixed using color codeon vehicle identification platein engine compartment. So when you pop the hood or open the doors the paint matches spot on.I prepped the truck for paint job by removing all lights, bumpers, windshields, rubber door gaskets.Very minor body work was done only to remove some dings that the truck had accumulated over the years.Otherwise the body is straightwith no signs at all of ever being in an accident, not even a fender bender. As mentionedearlier, that’s why I bought the truck because it was so original and unmolested. After therepaint,of course,Ipurchased theSR5 decal/stripes/tailgate lettering from a company that specializes in Toyota decal kits and had them installedlocallyby a professional vehicle graphics installer. He did an awesome job.JUST TO BE CLEARthe paint job is very nice but it’s not a “show car” paint job. In fact they missed a few very small dings on the tailgate. Having made that clear, in my opinion the paint job isstill an8 out of 10. In other words you won’t be embarrassed to drive this truck down the road.

I also replaced the carpet using an ACC Inc. (Auto Custom Carpet) molded carpet kit that is made specifically for the year and model. Fits vehicle like it was from the factory. Got some extra color matching carpet to redo the lower door panels so everything wouldmatch. Also has matching carpeted floor mats, but included is the original brown “TOYOTA” part rubber, partially carpeted floor mats.

I had the seats partially reupholstered. Let me explain. The originalcloth seat tops and backs had seen better days but thedark brownvinyl potions of seats (see pictures) were perfect. So I had a 30 year veteran, of auto upholstery, redo only the tops and back. That’sright,he unstitched it all and reused the original vinyl portions. Instead of going back with some other random fabric, I choose to use a blend of perforated and non-perforated vinyl materialthat matches the sportier look of bucket seats used in “ONLY” the 82 SR5. So you have the sportier, original factory look of 1982seats, with the reclining feature ofan1983. The guy did an excellent job, as to be expected from someone with all that experience. Seats mechanismsalloperate smoothly as they should.

I also replace dash pad with a “Toyota OEM”original dash padpurchase from a dealer in Oregon, which still has a few left. I did the work myself to insure that it was done in the least invasive way. Since I’vedone a few of these, I know the exact steps necessary for removal and replacement withouthaving to dismantle the whole dash area apart anddamaging anything.

I also replaced front windshield, since I had it off during repaint. The Toyota OEMfront windshieldis nolongeravailable, to my knowledge, but I did used a “Toyota OEM“ windshieldgasket, purchased from same dealer, to insure a good leak free fit. Front windshield gasket is an item that commonly needs replacement on these trucks as they get dry and cracked. Otherwise all other glass is original factory glass, including rear sliding window, allwith “Toyota” insignia etched into glass.

Another item that commonly needs replacement on these trucks is the side light markers. There are 2 red ones in the rear and 2 yellow in the front. These can be replaced withafter marketparts that are never an exact fit or look. Instead I purchased and installed the correct “Toyota” OEM lights for this year and model for a nice exact factory fit and original look.

The above mentioned items are the only things I’ve done to the truck. The rest of the truck is bone stock, unmolested “Toyota” solid. The 22R motorstarts up perfectly and idlesdown as it shouldwhen cold started and the RPM kicks up a notch when AC compressor engages. Transmission shifts smoothly (all 5 speeds &reverse) and 4WD works as it should. You can easily jump on the freeway and hit 70MPH no problem. Truck drives straight, no funny pulling to the right or left. These trucks are amazingly well built. All emission components are in place /unmolested.There is aVERYsmall oil leak that appears to be coming from rear seal. It’s really small and gets caught by skid plate. I figured on taking care of it, if and when I did a clutch job, but clutch works excellent so I never got to it. Front seal does not leak at all. Just to be clear this is a VERY smallleak, not like your adding oil all the time.Nothing like that at all.

Comes with original Toyota owner’s manual and “California”(specific)owner’s guide. Also still has the original spare wheel that came with truck.Looks like it’s never been used.Tire still has little rubbernubbieson it.Comes with original jack and tire changing kit/bag.

This truck still has a bunch of little thingson it that are evidence (in my opinion) that the truck just hasn’tbeen messed with. For exampleall 4 wheels wells still have the rubber flaps that keep mud and debris from getting all over engine compartment and rearbed under lining. Also the front skid plate isn’t missing. Some people don’t even know thatthetruck comes with a factory front skid plate because so often they are removed and not reinstalled. All around the truckbodyand in the engine compartment there are no bolts and screws missing or that have been replaced with non-original screws and bolts.

The interior is beautiful. The headliner is immaculate. Shifter knobs are clean. Shifter boot is also super clean. Center console is original and clean. This is a non-smoker truck. There is a VERY small tear on driver’s side door panel (upper brown section, see picture). It’s a partial tear that has been glued back.

This is a real time capsule. I have people stop me all the time asking about it. These trucks are truly one of a kind. All this being said, obviously thistruck is not perfect. It is still a 34 year old truck. This truck is from a time when people used a truck as a truck, not like today, a truck is the “family station wagon”.StillI challenge you to find one that is all intact and in original condition with the quality upgrades that I’ve done.
