This 1967 Toyota Publica Deluxe is being offered as a newly imported JDM example with just under 78k registered kilometers and a valid Georgia registration. These P20 series cars were produced for three years before being replaced by the P30 platform in 1969, and came in coupe, sedan, wagon, convertible, and truck bed configurations. They were marketed to the masses of Japan as basic and fuel efficient city cars, and sold nearly 128k units in their short production run.
The simple and upright cab styling is one of Toyota's best vintage designs, and provides excellent visibility all around. Bright white paintwork usually doesn't photograph too well, but a good location choice with decent lighting shows how well this car was cared for. The paint was clayed, buffed, polished and sealed once the car was delivered stateside, and shows a remarkable luster from stem to stern. There's a fair amount of chrome trim affixed to the exterior, and everything from the window trim down to the headlight buckets, bumpers and sill guards looks great, with no pitting, dulling, or other damage present. A few of the cool exterior design touches include the large "T" grille badge, JDM-spec fender mirrors, "Publica" script on the hood and upper fenders, external trunk hinges, and bumper-mounted rear plate lighting. Brand new 155/80 Classic tires have been fitted, and wear newly-sourced OEM wheel covers that have never been used.
Moving to the interior, a gentle patina throughout gives a nice lived-in feel without a sense of being overly needy. The black vinyl seats are dual textured, show only slight wearing, and provide lap belts for the front passengers. Dark red carpets with matching floor mats are in great shape, and have held their color well. The door seals were just replaced, and the perforated headliner is in fairly good shape, with just some slight wrinkling noticeable in the corners. The Deluxe models featured an AM radio and heater, and though the heater is functioning, the radio isn't currently hooked up due to incompatibility with U.S. frequencies. The only other issue is an intermittent right turn signal; that should be an easy fix. There isn't much in the way of additional switch gear, but the remaining knobs and dials are present and in good condition. A four-speed column shift helps to make the most of the 36 horses on tap, and provides a fun factor boost as well. Out back, the trunk floor is clean and houses an original-looking spare in the floor well.
An air-cooled, 790cc twin lives under the hood, and was recently given a tune-up. It operates smoothly, and runs through all the gears as it should without issue. There are no fluid leaks present, and a set of new plug wires along with distributor cap was installed. The muffler is also a newer item, and the exhaust header has been given a new heat wrap. The entire undercarriage was given an anti-rust coating by the previous owner, and though it looks like it was applied some time ago, it has held up quite well.
